Herausgegeben wurde die Bibel von dem bedeutenden Exeget und Ordenshistoriker Thomas Aquinas Erhard (1675-1743). Der Benediktiner in Wessobrunn war auch Initiator der Wessobrunner Bibelkonkordanz. - Die auch im Format etwas abweichenden Bände berieben u. bestoßen (Ecken u. tlw. Kapitale m. Fehlstellen). Both title pages of Bible with the copperplate engraved vignette of putto on clouds and b&w woodcuts throughout, title page printed in red and black in first volume. Text in two columns in Bible volumes. The three volumes bound uniformly in full calf, gilt decorated spines with five raised bands and red leather titled labels. 19th century ownership in ink to title pages of all three volumes "R. Atherton, April 1883" and small armorial label laid onto title page of volume one and two, very good condn. This esteemed Venetian press, Typographia Balleoniana, was well regarded for their printing of finely produced religious works.

Palau (29054) pide 58 láminas, además del frontis., pero ningún ejemplar que se encuentra a la venta, ni los que se recogen en el CCPB y el catálogo de la BNE tiene más ilustraciones que el frontis. Según Palau, esta, la primera de 4 ediciones de Palau, fue la primera biblia impresa en España desde 1590 (!). Marcas de agua ("Alcoy" en dos hojas, "T.R." en otra, y 2 escudos en las hojas blancas del principio y final. Firmas de anteriores propietarios en la primera hoja en blanco y la portada. Faltan las guardas; aunque las cubiertas están bastante rozadas, los interiores están muy limpios. Bellamente impreso a dos columnas por el maestro impresor de la Ilustración Española. Condition: Gut. 3 Bände. XXIV, 957; 832; 1 Bl. 623 S. Recht seltene "Münsteraner" Bibel herausgegeben von dem katholischen Theologen und Pädagogen Johann Hyacinth Kistemaker (* 15. August 1754 in Nordhorn; 2. März 1834 in Münster in Westfalen). Ab 1779 arbeitete er als Lehrer am Gymnasium Paulinum, dessen Direktor er 1794 nach dem Tod von Caspar Zumkley wurde.Gleichzeitig wurde er Leiter der Paulinischen Bibliothek. Ab 1786 folgte er zusätzlich einem Ruf auf den Lehrstuhl für Alte Sprachen an der Universität Münster. Nachdem ihm die Universität Paderborn die Doktorwürde der Philosophie zuerkannt hatte, wurde Kistemaker 1795 zum Professor für biblische Exegese an der Universität Münster ernannt. 1799 erhielt er ein Kanonikat am Stift St. Mauritz.Neben seiner Tätigkeit an Schule und Universität war Kistemaker von 1816 bis 1818 Mitglied des Konsistoriums der Provinz Westfalen und seit 1823 Mitglied des Münsteraner Domkapitels.1824 erkrankte Kistemaker und trat 1825 nach einer Reihe von Schlaganfällen in den Ruhestand. Die folgenden Lebensjahre verbrachte er in körperlicher und geistiger Lähmung. Kistemaker verfasste während seiner langen Laufbahn zur Unterstützung seiner Lehrtätigkeit mehrere lateinische, griechische und deutsche Sprachlehrbücher, die bis nach seinem Tod in Münster in Gebrauch blieben. Seine betont kirchliche Einstellung führte indes zu differenzierter Beurteilung seiner Schriften. Außerdem veröffentlichte Kistemaker eine Reihe von Übersetzungen aus modernen europäischen und orientalischen Sprachen, insbesondere eine Übersetzung des Neuen Testaments sowie exegetische Werke. Bindings with moderate worn, mainly at edges and corners, small hole in 1 label at spine; small library stamp on first fly leaves; some occasional browning else very good, solid and clean. First edition of the Sixtine Vulgate Bible, large paper copy. Engraved illustrated title-page. Title in red and black, text in double columns. 3 vols. Folio. The engraved title reads: Biblia sacra vulgatae editionis ad concilii Tridentini praescriptum emendata et a Sixto V.P.M. recognata et approbata. With the preliminary document, the Bull of Sixtus V, beginning 'Aeternus ille caelestium, terrestriumq. rerum omnium conditr, ac moderator Deus ". This is often lacking. An extraordinary copy of the Sixtine Bible, containing the Vulgate text as edited by Pope Sixtus V, intended as the first ecclesiastically authorized text to be used throughout Christendom. "In its text it comes closer to R. Stephanus' Bible of 1538-40 than to the Louvain editions" (Darlow & Moule, who discuss the textual variations). This copy includes examples of the printed overslips required to correct hurried printing. The association with Aldus II suggested by Renouard (and lasting long thereafter) is spurious. Pope Sixtus V died soon after the book was printed, and was followed by three short-lived popes. The Sixtine Bible had "aroused antagonism among both clergy and laity" and was swiftly condemned; the edition was withdrawn by Pope Clement VIII soon after his elevation to the papal throne in 1592, and many copies were destroyed. Preparations began in 1591 for a new edition of the Vulgate, printed in 1592 and known as the Clementine Bible, which long remained the standard Vulgate text. The ordinary issue of this printing measures 13-3/8 inches tall (as in the Brooker copy sold 2024); the present copy measures 15-3/4. AN OUTSTANDING LARGE PAPER COPY OF A NOTABLE EDITION. The text is preceded by Cardinal Bellarmino's preface, the Decree of the Council of Trent on the canonical Scriptures, and a brief by Clement VIII. "It is generally admitted that on the whole the Clementine text is critically an improvement upon the Sixtine. The Clementine Bible of 1592 remains to the present day the standard edition of the Roman Church" (Darlow & Moule). Nice wide-margined copy of this notable edition.
