While James' book has for decades been considered the finest book written about the game of cricket, the book could not, at first, find a publisher. One of the best books ever written on the sport of cricket and also an important work in the development of post-colonial studies. James was a former cricketer and also a Marxist/anti-Stalinist philosopher, decades ahead of his time with his bottom-up approach to popular culture and the political realm.
