In this book, Mr. Feis depicts the time of triumph, then traces the complex web of negotiation preceding the Potsdam conference so that the reader comes to the conference itself with a full understanding of the issues and personalities involved. One sees the quarrel over Poland and difficulties with Tito over Trieste, the arrival of a new American president, still uncomfortable in office but determined to get facts on the table and issues settled quickly, the influence of a new British prime minister suddenly replacing the masterful Churchill in mid~negotiations, and always the implacable, suspicious Stalin. Mr. Feis then gives an account of the conference which is likely to remain the standard reference both for factual content and for its depiction of the event. He has used all the published memoirs of the chiefs of state, military leaders, and diplomats, as well as eye~witness reports and papers of the State and War Deportments, the Harriman papers and other manuscript sources. If the seeds of the future are in the settlements of the past, this book will be recognized as essential for the understanding of postwar history.

Herbert Feis (June 7, 1893 - March 2, 1972) was an American Historian and economist. He was the Economic Advisor for International Affairs to the U.S. Department of State in the Hoover and Roosevelt administrations. Feis wrote at least 13 published books and won the annual Pulitzer Prize for History in 1961 for one of them, Between War and Peace: The Potsdam Conference. It features the Potsdam Conference and the origins of the Cold War. The Herbert Feis Award is awarded annually since 1984 by the American Historical Association, the preeminent professional society of historians, to recognize the recent work of public historians or independent scholars. Derived from a Kirkus review: After fifteen years since the conclusion of peace with the axis powers it was thought to be possible, in retrospect, to establish some semblance of order to the manifold and confusing ramifications of political activity during that epoch. The historical distance is great enough to enable the scholar to perceive and to clarify the relationship between the world's leaders and to put into proper perspective such controversial events as Yalta, the division of Germany, and the "desertion" of Eastern Europe to the Communists. The first section is a discussion of how the surrender with Germany was effected; the next part describes and analyses the rapid dissolution of the wartime partnership. The final section tells of the decisions made at the Potsdam Conference. This work has been done with care, meticulous scholarship, and with acute interpretation. This book is highly recommended.
