First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Unknown. Landscape format, sized c. 8.5" x 5.5". No date shown, but likely a little later than the First Edition, possiblty 1860/70. The book has been expanded to 30 plates here, so likely a later edition? . In the Original yellow/orange decorative blind-stamped cloth boards, with bright gilt titling to the front board only. Sound, Tight boards/outer hinges. The front inner hinge looks as if it has been reglued at some point, rear hinge sound. Yellow endpapers. Comprising 30 fine, b/w steel engraved, large, oval plates. The Tissue guard to each plate have all, bar one, been removed. The one remaining guard is quite darkened, and it was probably sensible to remove them, as often the guards didn't do what they were supposed to do and protect the engravings. The guards often browned/foxed and affected the plates! In this copy most of the plates are very clean and unfoxed. A few plates, mainly just the first few plates, have a few light foxing spots, but only to the blank surrounding edges, not affecting the engravings. The worst affected is the first plate of St Michael's Mount, and that's pretty good. Otherwise this is a VG plus to Near Fine set of 30 superb, large vignette type, steel engravings of Cornwall. No plates are dated, that I have seen. No inscriptions, or other marks. All Edges Gilt. Engravings include Penzance; Botallack Mine; St Ives; A Tin Mine; Redruth; The Logan Rock; Helston; Mullion; The Lizard; Falmouth; Truro; St Austell; Lostwithiel; Launceston; The Royal Albert Bridge, etc, etc. See Images; Oblong 8vo 8" to 9" long.
