This is the First Edition, now Out of Print - OP. The Yale Center for British Art keeps a copy in their Reference Library. "John Gay's 'The Beggar's Opera' was the theatrical sensation of 1728. Its underworld of prostitutes and thieves burlesqued the heroic visions of history and mythology offered by the reigning form of the Italian opera, as its simple songs offered a popular alternative to the Italian opera's florid arias and recitatives. Between 1728 and 1731, William Hogarth painted at least five versions of the scene from 'The Beggar's Opera' in which the imprisoned highwayman, Macheath, stands between his two wives while they appeal to their fathers to save him from execution." The prints have never been framed. Published by: Baldwin Cradock and Joy, 1835-1837 (original engr…avings c1728 and c1724) These prints are both copies of early 18th century engravings which were both for many years attributed to William Hogarth, the great British satirical artist. The Beggar's Opera print is now considered not to be by Hogarth. The prints are close copies of the existing prints, the original copper plates having been lost, made probably about 1800. Both prints are satirical views of the management of British Plays. The Beggar's Opera print is from an engraving made in 1728, the year The Beggar's Opera was first performed. See Paulson, Hogarth's Graphic Works 1989, page 34. The other print is fully titled "A Just View of the British Stage, or Three Heads are Better Than One", and Hogarth's original was engraved in 1724. It includes an engraved explanation. Both prints are vicious and complex in their satire, and further details and explanation can be found online and in Paulson's book. This copy of the prints is from the 1827 Baldwin Cradock and Joy publication of Hogarth's works.

An exceptionally fine, dark impression on bright paper, with the original wide margins untrimmed. § Third and best state (of seven, see below) of the single plate Blake engraved for Hogarth's Works, first publis…hed by Boydell in 1790, this state appearing in the second, undated edition c. 1795. It was the last state of the plate before hands other than Blake touched up the plate. A remarkably crisp and brilliant impression of Blake's richly detailed rendition of Hogarth's painting showing the famous scene in which Macheath the highwayman stands chained, under sentence of death, between his two lovers, the jailer's daughter Lucy Lockit, and the lawyer's daughter, Polly Peachum. The plate was next used for an 1822 edition by which time several small changes had been made by another engraver. Bentley, BB, 475 I. Essick, CBI, XX.
