Clean pages and illustrations with light tanning and mild foxing throughout. Moderate tanning to free endpapers due to dust jacket flaps. Pencil markings to front free endpaper and…back pastedown. Top textblock edge dyed blue. Binding remains firm. Boards have mild edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces and bumping to corners. Lettering is darkened. Moderate sunning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Minor splits to spine ends and corners causing cloth to be frayed. Boards are bowed. Visible wear marks to boards.

Second book, published when he was 19 (his first, "Caesar: The Story of a Panda Leopard," was published when he was 16) by the author who would later change his name to Patrick O'Brian, best-known for his Aubrey-Ma…turin novels of Nelson's navy. Color frontispiece and eight B&W internal (matte) illustrations are all firmly in place. "Good plus" original dust jacket is price-clipped, and is missing a narrow, 3-1/2 X 3/8- inch strip from bottom of rear panel, affecting no text. Previous owner's name, "Ivor G.M.G. Dorward," stamped to bottom of FFE and also to bottom page edges. Ivor Gardiner Menzies Gordon Dorward (1927-1983) grew up to become a prominent architect in Glasgow. The first two "Richard Russ" books are sought-after by O'Brian collectors. We also offer illustrator Tunnicliffe's "Sketches of Bird Life," separately. 84 pp. This volume now reduced from $350. With a colour frontispiece and eight b…lack and white plates by Tunnicliffe just his second bookform illustrations. Cloth lightly faded at the backstrip and at the extreme upper and lower edges of the boards. Binding a little tender at one gathering and with some glue residue markings and spotting to those leaves (only). A lengthy vertical crease to the rear endpaper. Faint ghost of erased pencil markings to the front free endpaper and to the title page. Very good in price-clipped dust wrapper with a reproduction of the colour frontispiece mounted on the front panel. The wrapper a little tanned, lightly chafed at the natural folds and with several tiny silvers of loss from the spine panel ends. Twelve stories of twelve royal beasts. Not noted by Cunningham.
