This series was a precursor to the popular Dick and Jane series used through the 1960's. In this book Jane has red hair and Dick has blonde hair. The book is in fine condition with clean bright interior pages and a black and green pictorial cover showing wear. The book was issued as an "examination copy" and that the words - for examination- are machined poked through the back cover. No dust jacket as issued. An unusual copy. Second edition, Hardcover, 5 1/2 x 7 1/2". 144 pp. Green, black and orange cloth over boards with illustration on cover, corner bumping and some spine cloth fraying, a few stains. Interior has some stains throughout and small amounts of foxing but is overall very bright and clean with many colorful illustrations by Miriam Story Hurfurd. Very good condition.William S. Gray developed the Curriculum Foundation Series of books for Scott, Foresman and Company. His vision was to tie "subject area" books in health, science, social studies, and arithmetic (each discipline having its own series of graded texts also published by Scott, Foresman and Company) with the vocabulary mastered in the basic readers, thus vastly improving readability in these same areas. These books often had the very recognizable names of Dick and Jane.

Original Wraps. Condition: Good. Life-reading Service 1930, A forerunner to the Dick & Jane series that dominated American schools in the 1950s. Spine is coming apart at the bottom approx. 3 inches, some creases on front cover 3 small closed tears and 3 pages have either some pencil or crayola marks on them none of which effects the pictures or the text. The first of the books for the Dick and Jane series, this was the one that followed and was revised from The Elson Pupil's Hand Chart. Delightful drawings of Dick, Jane, Baby, Spot, Little Mew (the cat), and all the other characters. Includes a last page listing 39 vocabulary words. A very good copy. Very tight. Faint ex-lib. stamp inside front cover, spine tape lightly wrinkled at one spot, and several pages have light age stains. Otherwise, no marks.

First printing of this edition. Original black, green and orange wrappers clean and bright with small corner crease, some minor spotting on the foredge, and accession and deaccession stamps from the Toledo schools on the inside cover.

First issue with three lines, 18 word Elson copyright and code '308.2' (Feb. 8, 1930) the earliest date noted for this book which was reprinted many times well into 1934. The first appearance of Dick and Jane. A revolutionary concept conceived by Zerna Sharp. In 1927 she visited the beach, studied children's speech patterns, and observed the way they spoke to one another. She brought her ideas to William Elson publisher of a Pupil's Hand Chart.
