Condition: Good. 1973. Reprinted. 573 pages. Pictorial dust jacket over blue cloth. Black and white diagrams throughout. Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Binding remains firm. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. Some mild marking and tanning. Unclipped jacket has moderate edge wear with some small tears, chipping and creasing. Some tanning and foxing to all surfaces, particularly to spine.

Small Octavo. bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering and stamping to spine and cover issued without jacket. Signed and limited to 500 copies of which this is number 26. (Limited edition not in Betts) First edition. Fine had an exceptionally brief but fruitful international career before changing from grandmaster to psychiatrist. Within three years, 1935-8, he developed from an unknown American master into co-winner of AVRO 1938, one of the highest-rated events ever held. Yet when chess revived after the second World War Fine was too busy with his studies to accept an invitation to the World Championship tournament of 1948. After AVRO 1938.
