Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. Early reprint of 1923 original. Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810 1891) was an American showman, businessman and politician remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus with James Anthony Bailey. He was also an author, publisher and philanthropist, although he said of himself: "I am a showman by profession . and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me." According to Barnum's critics, his personal aim was "to put money in his own coffers." The adage "there's a sucker born every minute" has frequently been attributed to him, although no evidence exists that he had indeed coined the phrase. This copy i very good in gray cloth with black titles on the spine and the front cover. The binding is sound but there is minor scuffing at the spine ends and the rear cover edge. The text shows slight age toning, but it otherwise unmarked and undamaged. There is an ink gift inscription and the name of a previous owner on the ffep, both dated 1928. The DJ has multiple tears and chips and has significantly darkened with age. The tears have tape repairs and the jacket is now in a mylar plastic protective cover. . DG.
