James Garner's original shooting script for the film in which he starred, Barbarians at the Gate. Quarto, bound in the original binder, with Garner's embossed name in gilt to the front panel. Lengthily signed by both authors on the title page, "I loved Larry Gelbart. Wish I'd loved his script! Bryan" and by co-author Helyar, "Recognize that ultimate success comes from opportunistic, bold moves which by definition, cannot be planned. John Helyar." Barbarians at the Gate was directed by Glenn Jordan and written by Larry Gelbart, based on the 1989 book of the same name by Bryan Burrough and John Helyar. The film stars James Garner, Jonathan Pryce, and Peter Riegert. It tells the true story of F. Ross Johnson, who was the president and CEO of RJR Nabisco. The film earned nine nominations at the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards, winning one for Outstanding Made for Television Movie. It also won Best Miniseries or Television Film and Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film for Garner at the 51st Golden Globe Awards. From the library of James Garner, with a signed note from his daughter laid in. The ultimate story of greed and glory, Barbarians at the Gate is the gripping account of these two frenzied months, of deal makers and publicity flaks, of an old-line industrial powerhouse that became the victim of the ruthless and rapacious style of finance in the 1980s. "It's hard to imagine a better story and it's hard to imagine a better account" (Chicago Tribune). Made into the film directed by Glenn Jordan and written by Larry Gelbart. It stars James Garner as F. Ross Johnson, the CEO of RJR Nabisco, Jonathan Pryce as Henry Kravis, his chief rival for the company and Fred Thompson as James Robinson III, the CEO of American Express.
