The first of his papers, Experimental Researches in Electricity is considered Faraday's greatest paper, as it reports the first production of electricity by electro-magnetic induction. Faraday was both one of the greatest physicists of the nineteenth century and one of the finest experimenters of all time. His principal contributions were made in advancing our knowledge of the nature and potentialities of electricity. Faraday pursued some suggestions of Wollaston based upon Oersted's discovery that a magnetic needle was deflected by an electric current (282), and in 1821 showed that a current-carrying wire would rotate round a magnetic pole, or a pole round a curent-carrying wire. This is the principle of the electric motor, Faraday long sought the opposite effect, that is the production of electricity magnetism, and finally discovered in 1831 that when a wire moved with respect to a magnetic pole a current flowed in it. This was the principle of the dynamo and of the transformer, and with it Faraday opened his great series of investigations into electricity. Faraday himself however was interested in these experiments only as a stage in his investigation of the phenomena of electromagnetism, by which he finally succeeded in demonstrating the identity of all forms of electricity however produced, whether by friction machines, voltaic piles, electric fish, lightning discharges or by any other means. He also showed that in electrolysis the quantity of chemical action is directly proportionate to the quantity of electricity used. Finally he enunciated his theory of 'lines' or 'tubes' of magnetic force which was the starting point for the revolutionary theories of Clerk Maxwell (355) and later of Einstein (408). Although his discovery of the electric motor and the dynamo was almost entirely incidental to his theoretical discoveries, it laid the foundation of the modern electrical industry- electric light and power, telephony, wireless telegraphy, television, etc.- by providing for the production of continuous mechanical motion from an electrical source, and vice versa." (PMM 308). "In 1831, after successfully inducing one electrical current by another, Faraday began his famous series of thirty Experimental Researches in Electricity. One of the finest experimental physicists of his time, he investigated electromagnetisim, electrochemistry, and electrostatics, to a point where he verged on the brink of field theory, the electron theory of matter, and the electromagnetic theory of light." (Sotheby's). PMM 308 (regarding reprint of 1839). HBS 68644. $10,000.

  • (London, Richard Taylor, 1851). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1851 - Part I. Pp. 1-6. First appearance of a historical paper in physiscs in which Faraday tries to unite all forces in nature. His experiments yielded a negative result."The long and constant persuasion that all forces of nature are mutually dependent, having one common origin, or rather being different manifestations of one fundamental power, has made me often think upon the possibility of establishing, by experiment, a connection between gravity and electricity, and so introducing the former into the group, the chain of which, including also magnetism, chemical force and heat, binds so many and such varied exhibitions of force together by common relations. Though the researches I have made with this object in view have produced only negative results, yet I think a short statement of the matter, as it has presented itself to my mind, andof the result of the experiments, which offering at first much to encourage, were only reduced to their true value by most careful searchings after sources of error, may be useful, both as a general statement of the problem, and as awakening the minds of others to its consideration."(Faraday section 2702).From 1831 to 1852 Michael Faraday published his "Experimental Researches in Electricity" in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. These papers contain not only an impressive series of experimental discoveries, but also a collection of heterodox theoretical concepts on the nature of these phenomena expressed in terms of lines of forces and fields. He published 30 papers in all under this general title. They represents Faraday's most importent work, are classics in both chemistry and physics and are the experimental foundations for Maxwell's electro-magnetic theory of light, using Faraday's concepts of lines of force or tubes of magnetic and electrical forces. His many experiments on the effects of electricity and magnetism presented in these papers lead to the fundamental discoveries of 'induced electricity' (the Farday current), the electronic state of matter, the identity of electricity from different sources, equivalents in electro-chemical decomposition, electrostatic induction, hydro-electricity, diamagnetism, relation of gravity to electricity, atmospheric magnetism and many other."Among experimental philosophers Faraday holds by universal consent the foremost place. The memoirs in which his discoveries are enshrined will never ceaseto be read with admiration and delight" and future generations will preserve with an affection not less enduring the personal records and familiar letters, which recall the memory of his humble and unselfish spirit."(Edmund Whittaker in A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity).

  • 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF TWO IMPORTANT PAPERS BY MICHAEL FARADAY, EACH PUBLISHED AS PART OF HIS LANDMARK TWENTY-NINE PAPER "EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCHES IN ELECTRICITY" SERIES. Also included, a significant paper by Thomas Graham on the motion of gases; also, an important paper by Gideon Mantell on the iguanodon. Handsomely bound, the volume is complete with Parts 1 & 2 and includes 43 plates. FARADAY: Faraday discusses magneto-crystallic force and the abnormal behavior of various crystals in a magnetic field. Faraday "hoped that when â??properly understood' the various phenomena examined in terms of their magnecrystallic, crystallographic and optic axes would come under â??one law [that] will include all these phenomena'" (Kox, No Truth Except in the Details). Faraday was an English chemist and physicist often thought to be the best experimentalist in the history of science. During Faraday's earlier experiments on electro-magnetical theory he had "observed some phenomena that led him to a belief in the existence of another form of force, distinct from either paramagnetic or diamagnetic force, which he called the magne-crystallic force. He had been experimenting with some slender needles of bismuth, suspending them horizontally between the poles of an electro-magnet. Taking a few of these cylinders at random from a greater number, he was much perplexed to find that they did not all come to rest equatorially, as well-behaved bars of diamagnetic bismuth should do, though, if subjected to the action of a single magnetic pole, they did show this diamagnetic character by their marked repulsion. After much experimentation, he ascribed this phenomenon to the crystalline condition of the cylinder. By experimenting with carefully selected groups of crystals of bismuth, he believed he could trace the cause of the phenomenon to the action of a force which he called the magne-crystallic force" (Houston, "Electricity and Magnetism"). We separately offer this paper dis-bound. GRAHAM: Graham was the first to carry out diffusion experiments on gases and in 1833 stated what is now called Graham's law of diffusion. The paper included here, "On the Motion of Gases" reports "a phenomenon which he named effusion of gases into a vacuum through a thin plate, "leaving no doubt of the truth of the general law, that different gases pass through minute apertures into a vacuum in times which are as the square roots of their respective specific gravities, or with velocities which are inversely as the square roots of their specific gravities," and that "the effusion-time of air of different temperatures is proportional to the square root of its density at each temperature" (Science Direct, 24, 2, 2013). MANTELL: Gideon Mantell "is best known for his discovery of the first dinosaur ever to be described properly - "a momentous event" and noted that the Iguanodon "was the first dinosaur ever to be described properly" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography, IX, 87). This paper supplements Mantell's earlier papers and comprises an account of some important additions which he has lately made to our previous knowledge of the osteological structure of the colossal reptiles. ALSO INCLUDED: Richard Owen's On the development and homologies of the carapace and plastron of the chelonian reptiles. CONDITION & DETAILS: Philosophical Transactions Parts 1 & 2 for the year 1849. Complete Ex-libris with bearing only two Royal College of Surgeons stamps. 4to. (11.5 by 9 inches; 288 x 225mm). [18], 523, [1], 15 , [4]. 43 plates.
