First Edition
First edition, celebrating a private sailing trip from Southampton to Cannes on the yacht Angela. They stopped along the way at various locations including Brest, Lisbon, Cadiz, Gibraltar, Alicante, Valencia, and Toulon, before selling the yacht at Cannes and returning to Britain. The original mounted photographs mostly depict the other ships they encountered. The passengers on this trip are identified as Harold and Reginald Child Beale, along with Vivian Curtayne Stratton. The 115-foot steam yacht Angela, built by Camper & Nicholsons, Ltd in 1896, was owned by another member of the family, Gilbert Ernest. Gilbert and Reginald Beale were directors and executives at Carter & Co. Seeds and Gilbert was noted for inventing and patenting seed packet displays. The Beales's descriptions are often evocative, for example they write: "Our arrival at Alicante in the early evening will long live in our memories, as we came in we lost the wind and in front of us over the glass smooth water we saw the Paseo de los Martires with its avenue of date palms illuminated with myriads of electric lights; and the Castillo of Santa Barbara looming out of the sky on a stark bare limestone hill 525 feet high, in the right background. It is perhaps the most picturesque water front in the world". Not in Toy. Quarto. Colour frontispiece map backed on linen and tipped in as issued, 25 mounted gelatin silver photographs, text printed within gilt borders. Original red morocco over bevelled boards, front board lettered in gilt, turn-ins tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Binding with light wear only, fore edge of rear board bumped, photographs a little toned and silvered: a very good copy indeed.
