Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Signed by Ed McBain on the title page, this 87th Precinct Omnibus is surprisingly scarce with the dust jacket, and even scarcer signed. The book has 598 pages and contains Like Love, Ten Plus One, and Axe. These were the first three Ed McBain books p…ublished by Hamish Hamilton after the author (real name Evan Hunter) joined their list in 1964. The book is still in very good condition, tightly bound to the point of feeling almost unread in parts, with no markings to the text. There's some very mild bumping to the bottom outer corner of the pages in the central section and some odd faint bending near the gutter of a couple of the signatures (text sections) in the middle of the book, that feel like they have something to do with the way it was originally bound (they don't affect the reading of the book). At the very front of the book, inside the front board and opposite, there's a little bit of browning. The red boards are still bright and solid, and show few signs of shelf wear and handling, beyond some very minor pushing in at the corners and top and bottom of the spine. Likewise with the jacket, which is in a protective sleeve, the spine is slightly faded, and there's a very small amount of rubbing along the edges, at the corners, and at the top and bottom of the spine. They're cleverly written books. Though they make a point of being tough and masculine, they've absorbed lessons from many other writers. For example: "In a day and age when prostitutes in any neighbourhood look more like high-fashion models than ladies of the trade, the woman's appearance was startling, if not contradictory. It was almost as if, by so blatantly announcing her calling, she were actually denying it." That "as if" is one of Charles Dickens' tricks. And while scholars say the title of Like Love doesn't allude to Auden's poem 'Law Like Love', it feels to us like it came from there. "Like love we don't know where or why, / Like love we can't compel or fly, / Like love we often weep, / Like love we seldom keep". Signed by Author(s).
