Add to basketHardback. Condition: Good. Beyond Automation (1964) by John Diebold ? McGraw-Hill Offered by Crappy Old Books ? specialists in yesterday?s futures. Back when computers still filled rooms and ?automation? was a terrifying buzzword, John Diebold was already peering into the future?and finding opportunity rather than doom. In Beyond Automation , this tech visionary explores how machines would reshape not just industry, but society, government, and the very nature of work. Spoiler: some of it came true, some of it got eaten by the internet. Published in 1964, this McGraw-Hill edition is a Cold War classic of techno-optimism, complete with that unmistakable whiff of punch cards and pipe smoke. Our copy? It?s got edgewear, pencilled notes from someone who thought Y2K was coming early, and possibly the ghost of an IBM 7090 trapped inside. Crappy Old Books ? Because the future always looks better in retrospect. Hardback with dust jacket in really good condition.…

Add to basket].[X],181p. Orig. cloth with clipped jacket with loss of one word, minor tear (1,5 cm) at top. First edition. A pioneering work on automation and the possibilities, limitations and social and economic consequences of the revolutionary new machines of the electronic age and what they will mean in terms of jobs, cost of goods and services, standards of living and increased leisure time'. It was Diebold's first book, based on his studies at the Harvard Business School. Owing to independent research and ever-persistent curiosity about the whole field of technology, he originated many of the concepts of data processing and utilization that are accepted today in both automation and management. This book was reissued unchanged on its 30th anniversary as a "management classic" by the American Management Association. He is credited with coining the word automation in its present meaning, and had much to do with introducing it to general usage.'.…

Contact seller5-star sellerdj. First printing. First edition of the pioneering businessman's first book, the work that "made 'automation' a household term" (THE SATURDAY EVENING POST). In AUTOMATION, John Diebold (1926-2005) foresaw how computers would replace a vast swathe of corporate functions: "Our clerical procedures," he wrote, "have been designed largely in terms of human limitations." The book was groundbreaking in a number of ways, not the least of which was the eventual establishment of The Diebold Group, the first consulting firm dedicated to computer use in business. A classic of corporate technology and management, the book's popularity inspired a sequel (BEYOND AUTOMATION, 1964) and was later included in the American Management Association's Classics reprint series. This copy bears the 1953 inscription of an electrical engineer working for General Electric, Lucien Terry Finch (1925-2005). Finch, who studied at the University of Michigan, would go on to become an executive at Sunbeam International, retiring in 1982. The first edition is uncommon, especially in jacket. A nice example with interesting provenance of this prescient work, with continuing applications to AI. 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original beige full cloth. In original unclipped ($3.00) printed typographic jacket. x, 182 pages. Jacket edgeworn with some chipping, soil, and faint dampstains. Book toned at extremities with some soiling to lower spine area. Previous owner's February 1953 inscription and contemporary ink ownership stamp on the front pastedown. Overall sound. Very good in a very good minus jacket. …
