No Binding. Condition: Fine. ("J. A. Sutter") 1 page with integral leaf, Pueblo de San Jose, March 13, 1850. 9 3/4" x 7 1/2". Fine. Sutter's contract with A. Schweeb and P. Barkman for building a two story house with attic in San Jose. Sutter agreed to provide the lumber. Terms were $1,000 within 30 days; another thousand in six weeks; and a final $2,000 on completion. Signed by Sutter, Schweeb, Barkman and a witness. The building of this house may relate to the fact that Sutter's family had recently rejoined him from Switzerland at the end of January, 1850. Sutter (1803-1880) was a Swiss pioneer in California. His gold discovery in 1848 kicked off the subsequent Gold Rush. Inscribed by Author(s).
