Signed and inscribed: "Washington D.C. Sept. 12th 1904 Frederick D. Grant Brig. Genl. U.S.A." Grant (1850-1912), born May 30, 1850, St. Louis, Missouri; died April 12, 1912, New York City; son of Ulysses S. Grant; graduated from West Point (1871); U.S. minister to Austria-Hungary (1889-1893); New York City police commissioner (1895-1897); distinguished in Philippine insurrection (1899-1902) and thereafter held territorial commands as regular major-general.
