Bifolium measuring 8 x 6.5", with a one page letter, addressed to "Monsieur Richard" on the address leaf. An autograph letter by French composer, music critic, and teacher Adolphe Adam, dated in the upper margin. The date is hard to read but possibly 1844. Very good with mild creasing and soiling, numbered "99" in upper corner.

8vo. 1½ pp. With autograph address and traces of seal. To a Mr Rougeot, major of the "4me Legion", concerning the commission of a cantata for a ball. Adam expresses his gratitude and excitement, since the cantata was supposed to be performed by the tenor Gilbert Duprez in the presence of the French King, probably Louis-Philippe. As he expects to be introduced to the King, he inquires after the proper formal attire: "Je doute que la lettre puisse vous arriver avant midi, mais la votre m'est venue trop tard pour que j'aie pu y répondre plutôt. Je soutiens [?] un bal projetté [!] avec d'autant plus d'empressement que je suis chargé de composer une cantate pour y être chanté par Duprez devant le Roi. Je me réjouis fort que l'honneur que l'on m'en fait de me choisir régullier [?] sur la 4me Légion à la quelle je suis fier d'appartenir. Comme il est probable que je serai présenté au Roi, veuillez bien me dire quel est le costume rigoureux. Est-ce le pantalon blanc et les bottes ou bien la culotte courte et les bas de soie? en tout cas le chapeau à cornes est de rigueur, je pense". - Somewhat creased and minimally stained.
