First edition.Rebacked with the original back strip and printed label laid down. Preserved in modern cloth-backed slipcase, lined with felt to the inside. Scarce to find in the original binding.This was the first of three novels written under the double-pseudonym used by British writer William Hale White, being Mark Rutherford "edited by his friend" Reuben Shapcott. He often addressed religious problems in his writings, with these early novels describing his own dissent from Protestant Christianity.White was a British writer and civil servant with broad contributions as a journalist to publications including The Birmingham Post, The Morning Star and The Nonconformist, as well as translations of Spinoza's Ethics and later books including Miriam's Schooling and Clara Hopgood. Rebacked with the original back strip and printed label laid down.Externally, with loss to the original back strip and wear and marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. A rare survival in the original publisher's binding In 1881 "The Autobiography of Mark Rutherford, fictitiously "edited by his friend Reuben Shapcott", appeared: White's first book at the age of fifty. Mark Rutherford's Deliverance followed in 1885, also edited by "Reuben Shapcott". Behind this double pseudonymous hedgewhich remained in place for all Hale White's fictional outingshe carefully spilt the beans about the chapel life and the narrow dissenting pietisms of his youth, and vented his satirical fury over what he perceived as the decline of the old nonconformist radicalisms into modern shallowness and hypocrisy" -ODNB.
