A presentation copy of this authoritative textbook, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Miss Helen Joan Smith, PhD, with many thanks for kind assistance. Edinburgh, 9 May 1952. Max Born". Smith's research on diamond lattices is cited on page 247. She also collaborated with Born on their 1942 paper, "Quantum T…heory and Diffuse X-Ray Reflexions". Smith received her PhD in 1947 from the University of Edinburgh, where Born was Tait Professor of Natural Philosophy until his retirement in 1952; this was likely the occasion that prompted this inscription. She also collaborated with the crystallographer, Kathleen Lonsdale. Written while Born was teaching at St John's College, Cambridge, Atomic Physics soon became the standard work on the subject. It was first published in 1935. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, front cover framed in blind. Cockling to cloth, spine ends and corners gently bumped, edges lightly foxed: a very good copy.
