TITLE: Assembling: Mapping the Cosmos, Codex Foundation (2017). Peter Rutledge Koch (editor)_____DESCRIPTION: Number 33 of 40 sets offered for sale. Complete set of twenty-five separate stiff white folders involving thirty artists, with each contributing artist's name in black letterpress titling on the front cover. Within each folder, each artist's contribution is enclosed, varying in media, format and length - from a single page, to multiple pages, to accordion foldouts, etc. Dimensions of printed pieces: approx. A4 (11.75 x 8.25 inches). The printed works on paper were made using a variety of methods, varying by artist, including: letterpress, screen print, hand-set type, photopolymer, wood type, silver gelatin, aquatint, mezzotint, intaglio, wood engraving, etc. A variety of exceptional papers were used by the artists: Cave paper, St. Armand, Magnani, Zerkall, Hahnemühle, and Fabriano, from handmade to industrial. Each artist's work is laid in the white folder with artist information and description of work printed on the back. The works may be purely visual and conceptual or may be accompanied by explanatory text. Each piece is signed and numbered by the artist. All 25 white folders are loosely laid in (in alphabetical order of artist's surname) a custom olive green cloth-covered varieé box with full length black leather spine and gilt titling made by John De Merritt, Bookbinder. The introduction, documentary information and wrappers were designed and printed letterpress at Peter Koch Printers. Of the 70 sets, 40 were offered for sale, 26 are lettered copies for distribution to the participants and 4 copies designated hors de commerce._____CONDITION: The 25 separate white folders (several folders have more than one artist contributor) and laid-in contents are in fine condition. The large olive cloth-covered box has a small indentation ("dimple") at the head of the leather spine but is otherwise in fine condition._____DISCUSSION: The Codex Foundation was conceived by noted fine press printer and private press publisher Peter Rutledge Koch and Susan Filter, a paper conservator, in 2005 to create an environment promoting the book as a work of art. This includes the Codex International Book Art Fair & Symposium held biennially, one of the most important book art fairs in the world, specializing in livre d'artiste works. This particular edition is only the second 'Assembling' livre d'artiste publication of the Codex Foundation with the stated intent of examining and 'mapping' the cosmos, consisting of "a carefully curated anthology of commissioned maps and cosmological meditations from thirty of the best and most imaginative artists and printers practicing today. The contributors, representing six nations on four continents, were chosen from amongst the 400+ artists and publishers who have exhibited at the previous five CODEX International Book Fairs." This is a remarkable livre d'artiste publication._____ NOTE: International shipping cost using USPS International priority EXPRESS Mail with tracking to most locations the United Kingdom and Europe is $75 U.S. dollars.
