First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. FIRST PRINTING of first USA edition. Original blue cloth, gilt lettering spine. Rear cover has burn marks and the bottom of the text block has similar browning. The inside pages are fine and not burnt or browned other than the bottom margin of the last few pages and the rear EPs. The pages are clean, have no foxing, no loss, no owner marks or writing on any pages, tight binding. Other than the browning rear cover and bottom of the text block the book is in excellent condition. The book does not have a smoky smell except when one's nose is pressed against the bottom of the text block (even then the scent is very slight). Flipping the pages creates no odor. This book suffered the damage while packed in a box that was super-heated on the bottom. Since the box was fully packed and squeezed tightly against and under other boxes, there was not enough oxygen for a flame to ignite, but there was partial carbonization, mainly to the bottom of the box that was atop the heat source. COMPLETE with all pages, plates, maps. The book measures 218mm tall x 144mm, and has 232 pages, 37 b/w photos, 2 maps (1 folding), index. Slightly smaller format otherwise same format as the UK 1st edition. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.
