GERIN-RICARD EDITIONS FOURNIER-VALDES, 1946 FORMAT GRAND IN-8, BROCHE, 491 PAGES L'auteur des célèbres « Après-dîners de CAMBACERES », Etienne Léon CARON, Comte de LAMOTHE LANGON, est né à Montpellier en 1786 et mort à Paris en 1864. Sa vie fut assez agitée. Protégé de CAMBACERES il fit partie du Conseil d'État en 1809, fut nommé Préfet de Toulouse en 1811, Sous-préfet de Livourne en 1813 et Préfet de l'Aude pendant les Cent Jours. Fidèle à ses engagements bonapartistes, inscrit sur les listes de proscription royalistes, il se retira chez lui de 1815 à 1819. Louis XVIII mit fin à cet exil intérieur en 1818 et lui permit même de présenter deux tragédies écrites par lui à la Comédie Française. A son retour à Paris son premier soin fut de reparaître chez le Prince de CAMBACERES et de réunir les éléments qui lui permirent d'écrire ses « Après-dîners » produits des conversations qu'il eut ou entendit avec tous ceux qui fréquentaient alors le Prince de CAMBACERES. « On n'observait plus chez le Prince une étiquette sévère; mais un petit nombre d'anciens courtisans, restés fidèles à la grandeur tombée en demeuraient les habitués. Chaque après-midi, l'été dans son jardin, l'hiver dans son cabinet, le Prince était l'âme d'une conversation intéressante chacun y apportait son contingent, et lui-même fournissait la meilleure part ». L'Ancien Régime, la Révolution, Le Directoire, Le Consulat, L'Empire principalement et la Restauration naissante, fournissaient le texte de ces conversations. Des témoins oculaires, auteurs de ces scènes diverses, les reprenaient dans leurs moindres détails. Il était passionnant d'entendre ces vieilles expériences, ces hautes capacités, raconter ce qu'elles avaient vu ou fait à telle ou telle époque: ce n'étaient pas les froids « on m'a dit » mais bien l'énergique, l'incisif, le palpitant « un jour que l'Empereur m'avait fait appeler » ou bien « Robespierre s'adressant à moi » ou bien encore « Carnot retraçant les détails de Fructidor ». Tour à tour ce sont des secrets d'État révélés, des propos parisiens, les causes qui firent tourner à la peine de mort le jugement de Louis XVI, les conciliabules entre Cambacérès, Talleyrand, Barras, Mme de Staël et Benjamin Constant; le mariage impossible de Robespierre, des propos et des lettres inédits de Fouché, Napoléon, Carnot, Barras; des détails nouveaux sur la mort de Marat; comment on annonça le débarquement de Napoléon aux Parisiens; les intrigues de Fouché, etc. Ce sont ces choses vues, ces faits vrais, ces confidences de CAMBACERES et de ses interlocuteurs, derrières lesquels Lamothe Langon s'efface, qui font la matière de ce livre et qui jettent une lueur nouvelle sur l'histoire passionnante de la Révolution et de l'Empire.
