The preacher, who already by then had a well~deserved notorious reputation, was indicted for murder and faced the death penalty. The story was page~one news across the country. In fact, it may be the most famous you have never heard. John Franklyn Norris ~ "J. Frank" as he was known was the most colorful and controversial clergyman of rhe time. From his pulpit at First Baptist Church in downtown Fort Worth, Texas, he waged war against a culture that was changing dramatically. Many loved him; many more hated him. The infamous preacher developed remarkable skills as a Showman, promoter, oraror, and self~styled church~effiency expert. He became a composite personality, blending some Billy Sunday with a touch of P. T. Barnum, and with a little William Randolph Hearst thrown in. Oh, and he had a Napoleon complex. Not your typical man of the cloth. Thousands flocked to his church. Multiplied thousands more listened to him on rhe radio. He even published his own tabloid newspaper called the Searchlight, read weekly by more than 100,000 people. And because First Baptist had the largest auditorium in town, Norris' platform became the venue of choice important visitors, from former presidents, to Will Rogers. In fact, in the middle of the Roaring Twenties. J. Frank Norris was poised to become a major religious figure in America, following the death of William Jennings Bryan. Everything changed, though, in a moment of violence one sweltering hot Saturday afternoon, when Dexter Elliot Chipps walked into J. Frank Norris' office for the first and last time. The leading citizens of the day in the city on the Trinity River figure prominently in this story, including Mr, Amon Carter, the owner/publisher of the American souths largest newspaper. the Fort Worth Star Telegram, as well as the owner of radio station WBAP. H.C. Meacham was a wealthy department store owner, as well as the city's mayor. Carter and Meacham were friends of the slain man and pallbearers at his funeral. Apparent Danger is a story that weaves in the thrills and agonies of the great post~World War I oil boom in Texas, with Fort Worth as a center of activity, And it explores how seemingly mundane city politics can become a prescription for murder. The narrative describes one of the most famous and celebrated Courtroom dramas of the era. At issue was a little known legal doctrine called "apparent danger," On this hinged the outcome of the famous trial and the very life of the Revcrend J. Frank Norris.
