Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 5 volume set, 7 inches tall. Quarter calf with gilt bands, twin labels and charming gilt tooling to the panels. First edition in French of Anne of Geierstein; or, the Maiden of the Mist (Edinburgh, 1829), which though separately issued also formed part of the Oeuvres complètes, as stated on the half-titles. This set is from the library, though without the bookplates, assembled at Voltaire's former home, the Chateau de Cirey ( Champagne) by Mme de Simiane ( 1761-1835 ), sometime lover of Lafayette and later, a correspondent of Fanny Burney. Diane-Adelaide de Simiane's early life was colourful and she came to Cirey in 1795 after a period of incarceration during the Terror. Previously she had been married to Charles-Francois de Simiane, who had served with Lafayette in America and who died in mysterious circumstances in 1787.

Add to basketThe Centenary Edition of Sir Walter Scott's Waverly Novels. Octavo, 12 volumes bound in three quarter morocco over marbled boards by Robertson with burgundy morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. Illustrated title page and tissue-guarded frontispiece to each volume, in-text illustrations. In very good condition. A lengthy series of novels by Sir Walter Scott, The Waverley Novels were among the most popular and widely read novels in Europe for nearly a century. Because Scott did not publicly acknowledge authorship until 1827, the series takes its name from Waverley, the first novel of the series released in 1814. The later books bore the words "by the author of Waverley" on their title pages. "Scottâs influence as a novelist was incalculable; he established the form of the historical novel, and the form of the short story" (Drabble, 879).
