Add to basketWraps. Condition: Very good. First Edition. Limited to 700 unnumbered copies printed by Anderson, Ritchie & Simon. Octavo: [48] p. with 34 photographic images. Original white paper wrappers, with printed lime green wrappers. The ink stamp of Wittenborn and Company appears on the title page. Faint hint of tobacco. Very slight rippling to the bottom edge of the front panel, with a bit of mild toning along the extremities; else very good or better in the original glassine dust wrapper. "One of Ed Ruscha's groundbreaking mass-produced artist's books, Some Los Angeles Apartments documents the banality and standardization of the urban landscape of his adopted home of Los Angeles. In deadpan style, Ruscha presents an extended sequence of black and white photographs of the city's ubiquitous mid-century dingbat and low-rise apartment block. For Ruscha, the array of variations within a formulaic architectural type reflected the unique culture of postwar Los Angeles, while revealing the dreariness of the modern American lifestyle. Ruscha captions each of the book's 34 photolithographs with the building's street address, which collectively serve as a roadmap of sorts for the city's sprawling residential neighborhoods. There is no additional text" (Minneapolis Institute of Art).

Add to basketFirst Edition. Small octavo. One of 700 copies, printed by Anderson, Ritchie and Simon. Ruscha's third book, uncommon in the first edition. Designed and photographed by Ruscha, with 34 black and white reproductions of mid-sixties Los Angeles apartment buildings, each identified by address. (Parr / Badger, v2, 140). Together with a letter dated Sept. 30, 1966, on 8 X 10 stationery; Ruscha's apology and explanation for only having Some Los Angeles Apartments to send in a book trade: '"TWENTYSIX GASOLINE STATIONS" is out of print but Wittenborn's in NYC may have a few copies left. "Various Small Fires" may also be at Wittenborn's. They will soon have a 4th book of mine which I have no copies available, entitled "The Sunset Strip" and opens to 27 feet."' Important document from perhaps the peak of Ruscha's bookmaking practice, with copies of his first books selling out and The Sunset Strip about to debut. HInt of toning to the extremities, else near fine in printed wrappers in the near fine publisher's glassine, lightly tanned. Letter folded in four to fit inside the book, and one short corner crease, otherwise near fine.

Add to basketPrinted Wrappers with Glassine. Condition: Fine. First Edition 1/700. np (48pp), 34 b&w illustrations. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Some Los Angeles Apartments" is Ed Ruscha's third artist book - a wry yet heartfelt photographic survey of the subtle beauty of the post-war Southern California rental property construction boom. A spectacularly bright, most handsome example of the uncommon 1965 first edition (entry B3 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999" which is also cited on page 141 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", pages 198-201 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 105 of "From Fair to Fine 2", and page 226 of "From Fair to Fine 3") limited to seven hundred unnumbered copies in the publisher's glassine wrapper showing some typical minor age patination along with a few tiny closed tears along the top edge of the rear panel. All in all, this is an exceptional example of this important little gem that is often confused with the 1990 Whitney Museum exhibition catalogue of virtually the same title. Artist's Book.

Add to basketSoftcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. Glossy printed plain white wraps with original glassine jacket. 5.55" x 7.05" An extraordinary copy of the third of Ruscha's iconic publications, in pristine condition. The glassine jacket is all original and unscathed, The jacket exhibits some minor age-toning and offsetting from where this book set within a pile of two other Ruscha books for some period of time as if in a display. There is a tiny fold to the inside glassine jacket at the rear of SOME LOS ANGELES APARTMENTS. The superior condition of this book cannot be overstated. From what can be pieced together, this book was part of a group of Rusca's first three books which was likely sent to a New York Art Book store as part of a marketing campaign to sell the books, which originally did not sell well for Ruscha. This book is a true first edition, first printing. SOME LOS ANGELES APARTMENTS is dated 1965 at the base of the title-page and is copyright 1965, and printed by Anderson Ritchie & Simon, Los Angeles. 700 copies printed. An extraordinary copy.
