(Typed letters) one 1p folio (in French), the other (in English) one page 8vo (cover for a substantial newspaper article about Ernest MacMillan, Canadian composer; (Autograph Letters) one eight pages, cr. 8vo, the second twelve pages 8vo, the third one page 16mo (initialled); and a card to "Scott". Letter One (TLS, 10-10-1937, one page, in French, accents inked in) he has suffered from bronchitis, blaming the nature of Canadian weather. He discusses mutual friends, one of whom will send him a photo of the "Empress of Britain". He visits Toronto where he went to a "bon concert symphonique". He discusses the CBC (presumably Canadian Broadcasting Company); Letter Two (Card, 23-1-38, in French, to "Scott") He seems to want the complete address of a 'Malcolm [Murray?] Mac Laren'; Letter Three (TLS, one page, 31-1-38, in English; Enclosure: substantial newspaper article (present) about Ernest MacMillan, composer) Roy refers to the newspaper article enclosed, summarising MacMillan's career at length Letter Four (12pp., 12-5-38, in French and English) He seems to be discussing his work, contact with Maclaren, politics ("I do love my country and I am fighting for its artistic and intellectual evolution but I can't hate our English brothers [underlined] or despise our Celtic cousins, even if I do my best to be fair to our French Kinsmen who deserve it", he discusses fascists in Canada (importing arms) at length, returns to his music ("melodic strings" success), news of his father (discharged from hospital), etc, etc; Letter Five (7pp, 4to, 24-12[38?] in French) discusses "Poemes", Mac Laren's anthology, racial mix in Great Britain, invasions in Great Britain and the various races (Celts, Scots, anglo-saxon, etc.), naming the poems he particularly liked, then mentions Ernest Macmillan, a musical trip to Montreal etc, a discursive letter to an obviously good friend; Letter Six (ANS, one page, 16mo, 6-8-38, in English) commending his correspondent's "good faith" on a matter that didn't seem to have worked out. WITH carbon copy typescript, one page, sm. folio, with date and address filled in in Roy's hand, of programme of Roy's early works on the radio, by "The Toronto Melodic Strings" on "Friday June July 1938", entries follow pattern of title and comment (eg. "Prelude (First), B minor. A youthful but virile elegy, where hope smiles. 1907").
