Heavy crack at title page, with front board pulled for the text block and held by just binding netting. Text block is very shaky. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Cloth has minor damp and dust stains. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. A compact, but comprehensive listing of thye ships of all the world's navies --- combatant, neutal or uninvolved --- virtually at the time of the outbreak of war in 1939. It list all the ships, and where possible give details of those under contruction, such as the battleships Bismark and Tirpitz, the RN's King George V and Lion classs and the Italian Littorio class, but not the Japanese Yamato super battleships. The ships lists include capital ships, carriers, cruisers, destroyers, submarines and sometimes auxillary and small craft. The fleet lists are illustrated throuughout by photographs. The first 270 pages cover historical data of warship evolution, warship types, nautical terms for ships and seafaring, mechanical, armour and armament information and a host of other detail in the 43 chapters preceding the fleet list. Throughout the preliminary sections are maps, diagrams, plans etc, some in colour for flags, ships badges, signal flags, medal ribbons etc. Much of this material is devoted to the RN. Some of the illustrations are fold out. Publication date not stated but c.1940. 738 pages, including several left blank for notes, followed by eight pages publishers related books, illustrated throughout including map e/papers. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles VG, text block generally excellent but one foldout (shoulder and sleeve RN rank designators) has lower section missing, back board is loose, with e/paper split at hinge.
