The Reverend Basil Watson, who has died aged 88, performed his role as an Anglican priest with panache, both as a Royal Navy chaplain during the Second World War and later as the vicar of a City of London church where his vigorous ministry led him to be labelled, with some exasperation by his fellow clergy, as "the chaplain of the Right". Watson published this book in 1993, Air and Graces, a potted guide to the livery companies and an anthology of his graces. Couched in doggerel and spiced with humour, these sparkled with satire when they referred to some of the City's special concerns, such as bids, offers, insider-dealing or share issues. This book also includes his memoirs of life at sea in the 'Woolworth' carrier HMS Attacker and the Japanese surrender. This dedicated copy has been signed by the author on the f.e.p. Ref OO5.
