The contents are clean & unmarked, the binding is tight. Date + colophon on the verso-first edition.

First Australian Edition. 8vo.pp.236 with black & white illustrations by the author. Green cloth hard cover in slightly chipped and rubbed dust wrapper [top edge] else very good. This novel was banned in Australia. It was made into a film with Helen Mirren and James Mason.

Faint paper remnants on the endpapers, else near fine, lacking the dustwrapper. A humorous novel about an Australian artist, living a carefree life on the beach, whose placid existence is interrupted by a model. Basis for an amusing 1969 film directed by Michael Powell and featuring James Mason and Helen Mirren. Very uncommon.

Lindsay was one of Australia's most prominent artists, although his writing was disturbing to the moral order of the day. This book, for example, was banned in Australia until 1962. Morality and sexuality aside, this is also an interesting book in terms of "the gaze", and real/imaginary images of women. It was turned into a 1969 Michael Powell film starring Helen Mirren in her first major role.

[good sound copy with light shelfwear, miniscule bumping to a couple of corners; jacket a little worn and slightly creased along top edge, with a few other tiny edge-nicks, fading to spine, tiny chip at base of spine, diagonal white scrape mark on front panel]. (line drawings) Somewhat risque comic novel -- "Rabelaisian" is the preferred term, I believe -- by this Australian artist-illustrator, about a curmudgeonly artist living with his dog, Edmund, in a shanty on a remote beach. He only wants to be left alone to paint seascapes, but has his idyllic paradise increasingly compromised -- first by the appearance of a nubile (and scantily clad) teen-age girl, who he immediately recognizes as an ideal model/muse, and subsequently by a gaggle of eccentric characters, including the girl's gin-swilling grandmother and a runaway bank clerk. Lindsay was somewhat of a literary bad boy of his day, having already experienced some censorship difficulties with several of his previous novels; this one, in fact, was not published in Australia until 1962. The book was filmed in 1969 by Michael Powell (one of his last movies), with Helen Mirren (one of her first) beguiling artist James Mason.

Tight and VG+ (light offsetting along the pastedowns and the inner gutters) in a bright, price-intact, VG dustjacket, with several small closed tears and light creasing at the panel edges. A bit of mild soiling as well to the rear panel. Thick 12mo, illustrated throughout in line drawings by the author himself.
