Born in Whitby in 1780, Wetherell first joined the British merchant navy serving and trained and qualified as a ships's carpenter, before being impressed into the Royal Navy. He saw service on HMS Hussar, but after she went aground on the coast of France he was captured and made a prisoner-of-war and spent most of the next eleven years at Charlemont Givet Prison.
