Paperback. Condition: Good. In the last few years, issues related to human rights, including encouraging the democratization of Muslim societies from the Middle East to Southeast Asia, have acquired great importance in shaping the character of U.S.-Muslim relations and U.S. policy toward Muslim countries. An important impetus behind this development were the tragic events of 9/11, which demonstrated the destructive potential of militant groups that use a distorted interpretation of Islam as justification for their actions. These events also led to a greater realization by the United States--and the West--that a lack of democracy and lack of respect for human rights have been contributory factors to the rise of militant Islam. Consequently, in its approach toward the Muslim world, the United States has emphasized the themes of human rights and democracy. Within the Islamic world, too, both secular and moderate Islamists have begun focusing on issues related to human rights. Although many conservative Muslims believe that Islam is incompatible with Western notions of democracy and human rights, reformist Muslim thinkers and activists maintain that a proper reading of Islamic injunctions and the ethical values underpinning those injunctions shows there is no such incompatibility. Complicating the debate is the fact that many Muslims--secular as well as conservative and reformist--doubt the seriousness of the U.S. commitment to the cause of human rights and democracy in the Muslim world, believing that the United States applies human rights' standards selectively to suit its strategic and economic interests. Irrespective of the validity of these charges, they are part of the context of the U.S.-Muslim dialogue on human rights. And it is this complex dialogue that this volume seeks to advance.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Living The Remote Dream details my journey to make an impact in the world without being constrained by the concept of a conventional workplace. I hope this guide will enable more of us to travel the world, spend more time with our families, and be even more productive. The daily commute has become an ingrained part of modern society, largely defined by what was necessary to communicate and share ideas decades ago. In the Internet age, the globe is far smaller. Connectivity is abundant, and collaborating with colleagues sitting in different continents is no longer the challenge it once was. As the walls of communication have been shattered by e-mail, video chats and telepresence solutions, it's time that we redirect the resources we're spending on our 9 to 5 treks. This book provides step-by-step guidance in planning for a remote transition, tackling the topic with your boss, and working to ensure that you're even more productive when left to define your own office. You'll learn what's in my arsenal of gadgetry, and which tools I lean on most to hone my focus and productivity. You'll understand that getting away from the grind is oftentimes what is needed to find the clarity you've been seeking. You'll also learn a little about me, my journey through the halcyon years of tech blogging, and what careers are best suited for remote working arrangements. Living The Remote Dream delivers practical, actionable advice on how to pivot your career into a remote one. For those who long for more freedom and flexibility - and are willing to work for it - this guide is for you. …

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. What can today's business managers learn from the past? A great deal, according to Richard Luecke, and in Scuttle Your Ships, he advances the premise that many of the challenges faced by management today have been confronted before by major figures in history. Drawing parallels with Admiral Yamamoto's defeat at Midway, Hernan Cortes's gamble for the Aztec Empire, Hadrian's consolidation of the Roman Empire, and the English victory at Agincourt, the book examines rapid revolutionary change, the risks of decision making, institutional cycles of rise and decline, the power of new ideas, and many other challenges faced by modern business leaders. Making clear connections between historical facts and the recent experiences of major companies, this is the ideal book for all who would manage and lead in the 1990s and beyond.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER . United States Senator Cory Booker, hailed as "one of the key figures for justice and forthrightness in America today" (HuffPost), makes an impassioned case that the virtues of empathy, responsibility, and action must guide our nation toward a brighter future. Raised in northern New Jersey, Cory Booker went to Stanford University on a football scholarship, accepted a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, then studied at Yale Law School. Upon graduation, his options were limitless. He chose public service. And in 2013, after more than seven years as mayor of Newark, he became the first Black man elected to represent New Jersey in the U.S. Senate. In United, Booker draws on personal experience to issue a stirring call to reorient our nation and our politics around the principles of compassion and solidarity. He speaks of rising above despair to engage with hope, pursuing our shared mission, and embracing our common destiny. Here is his account of his own political education, the moments-some entertaining, some heartbreaking, all of them enlightening-that have shaped his civic vision. Booker shares the lessons he learned from the remarkable men and women who inspired him to serve and whose example fueled his desire to create opportunities for others. Here also are his observations on the issues he cares about most deeply, from race and the crisis of mass incarceration to economic and environmental justice. In a world where we too easily lose touch with our neighbors, he argues, we must remember that we all rise or fall together-and that we must move beyond mere tolerance for one another toward a deeper connection: love.…

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Since ancient times, people with disabilities have been ridiculed, ignored, and even tortured - and while this problem has plagued society for far too long, the media has largely turned a blind eye to it. Silent No Longer is the story of Robert Stack's forty-year career in the disability industry, revealing the horrible neglect that persists today and asking why tens of thousands of people are still unnecessarily incarcerated in institutions that fail them. Stack is a veteran of the industry and the founder and CEO of Community Options - one of the largest non-profit organizations supporting persons with disabilities today - and offers a firsthand account of the neglect and abuse he has witnessed in his decades of advocacy. In this eye-opening dive into the disability industry, Stack pulls back the curtain on the systemic mistreatment that has plagued the disability community for far too long: Exposing the disturbing rise of private equity firms investing in facilities that prioritize profits over care; Highlighting the tactics used to make substandard institutions appear high-quality; Revealing the stark disparities in funding and care across the United States. With over 7 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in America, and some 80 million family members who love and care for them, Silent No Longer is a crucial resource for industry professionals and policymakers alike - and a demand that we restore dignity to those most vulnerable members of our society.…
