(Sammlung Dieterich.193). * Der bedeutende psychologisch-autobiographische Roman des aus einer in die Schweiz emigrierten wohlhabenden Hugenottenfamilie stammenden Benjamin Constant de Rebecque (1767-1830), ausgebildet in Oxford und Erlangen, im Kontakt mit den Encyclopédisten, unterhält 15 Jahre lang eine enge Beziehung zu Madame de Stael, wird zusammen mit ihr von Napoleon verbannt. Nach 1815 wird er Abgeordneter in Paris, ausgestattet mit einer mitreißenden Rednergabe, und war zuletzt Präsident des Staatsrates. Am Schluß (S. 123-134) eine Biographie Constants aus der Feder des Herausgebers Karl Blasche.
