This book is a record of the October 13-15, 1988 workshop sponsored by the US Army Research Office held at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. There were seventy participants attending the workshop and listened to nineteen lectures covering the theoretical and computational aspects of adaptive approaches and the use of these methods in selected applications. The aim of this book is to record the spirit of this workshop by including papers that are based on most of these presentations. Topics contained in this volume include the reliability of computations; a posteriori error estimation; adaptive h-, p-,and r-refinement; method of lines and local refinement methods for time-dependent problems; parallel solution techniques; and applications of adaptive methods to problems in elasticity. fluid mechanics, and combustion. Issues of reliability. presented in the contributions by Babuika and Szabo. note the importance of specifying computational accuracy in relation to the idealizations of the mathematical model. Thus, one should envision a sequence of computations where the enhancements and refinements are added to the physical model as the computational procedure is enriched. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. xiii PREFACE Mesh generation is one of the most time consuming aspects of com putational solutions of problems involving partial differential equations. It is, furthermore, no longer acceptable to compute solutions without proper verification that specified accuracy criteria are being satisfied. Mesh gen eration must be related to the solution through computable estimates of discretization errors. Thus, an iterative process of alternate mesh and so lution generation evolves in an adaptive manner with the end result that the solution is computed to prescribed specifications in an optimal, or at least efficient, manner. While mesh generation and adaptive strategies are becoming available, major computational challenges remain. One, in particular, involves moving boundaries and interfaces, such as free-surface flows and fluid-structure interactions.
