This legislation clarified provisions of the 1740 Leeds and Halifax Roads Act (which created the turnpike from Selby through Leeds to Halifax) and authorized the separate maintenance of the important route from Tadcaster over Bramham Moor through Seacroft to Halton Dial, where it joined the Selby-Leeds road. The Trust operated until 1873, collecting tolls to maintain this crucial West Riding coaching route. The original 1740 Act established one of Britain's earliest turnpike systems during the initial expansion of turnpike trusts beyond the Home Counties. These trusts transformed English road infrastructure by enabling local businessmen and gentry to collect tolls for highway improvement rather than relying on ineffective parish maintenance. The Tadcaster route served as a vital link in Yorkshire's commercial network, connecting the market town to Leeds and the broader West Riding road system. A significant example of mid-Georgian transport legislation documenting the development of Yorkshire's road infrastructure during the crucial period of turnpike expansion. ; 31.2 x 20.1 cms; 531-566 pages.
