Achilles was the fastest running in ancient Greece and Achilles the donkey was named after him because his mother constantly reminded him that donkeys who could run would always get out of trouble. When he is sent to a new home on a sea voyage. He meets a pelican who suggests that if he doesn't like his new home, he should run away. So he does. Color illustrations. Size: 8.5 x 10.75.

In its original dust wrapper, rubbed at edges, crushed at spine ends, a little browned and shelf worn. Carol Barker painted the pictures in this book after a visit to Greece (where the story is set). British writer H E Bates (Fair Stood the Wind for France; Love for Lydia; The Darling Buds of May etc) liked the pictures so much he agreed to provide a text story to accompany them - and Achilles the Donkey was born. There were to be two further Achilles stories from the partnership - Achilles and Diana and Achilles and the Twins.

Good condition in like dustwrapper (price clipped, sunned spine and edges, several closed tears, faint line at mid-front cover, light foxing, a bit grubby, lightly chipped corners). Printed boards with illustrated endpapers. General mild wear. Bumped, lightly foxed, bookseller's stamp opposite half-title. Pictures available on request. 'Carole Barker painted the pictures in this book after a visit to Greece. They were shown to H.E. Bates who liked them so much that he agreed immediately to contribute a text.' A book full of charm.
