JW consignment. Shelved in hallway. John Grisham was born on February 8, 1955 in Jonesboro, AK. At four Grisham's family would settle in Mississippi, where Grisham would grow up, holding several odd-jobs as a teenager, and giving up on his dream of being a baseball player before heading to college at age 18. Pursuing higher education was always something Grisham's family encouraged, and pushed him to earn both a bachelors' and law degree, a career and interest that would inspire his writings to come. As his legal career began, Grisham entered into the political sphere as well in 1983, winning a seat in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Though he was the vice-chairman of several committees, Grisham would fall out of favor in 1988, leaving his position in 1990. During the last years of his political career, out of favor with the legislature, Grisham dedicated much of his time to his novels. His first novel, "A Time to Kill", saw middling success, selling only 5,000 copies in 1988. It would be Grisham's second novel, "The Firm", which would truly see Grisham's career blossom. "The Firm" remained on the New York Times Bestseller list for 47 weeks in 1991, beginning a record of Grisham's novels remaining on the Bestseller list in some capacity for the next 20 years. "The Firm" would be adapted into a movie in 1993, grossing $270 million, and leading to Grisham's novels having a short run through 1994 of immense success, seeing leads from Tom Cruise, to Denzel Washington, and Susan Sarandon, and each earning over $100 million. Following "The Firm".
