Book is in very fine condition and nearly pristine: it is square, hinges tight, corners not bumped, no dings on edges, head and heel of spine lightly bumped with no fabric damage; it has some light smudge-type stains on the top two inches of the fore edge. The interior is pristine: it is clean and unmarked; no page corners folded or damaged; pages are tight and clean with no marks; no discoloration or staining (those fore edge stains did not penetrate); hinges are tight and undamaged; no distortion of the book from reading or improper shelving. Jacket is in very good to near fine condition: it is clean with tiny chips at all 4 corners and at the head and heel of the spine; additionally, there is a 3/4" tear at the bottom of the rear panel at the spine, with a 5" crease originating from that tear (see photo); jacket has no fading; publisher's original price of "$5.00" listed on the upper right corner of front flap. Condition of book and jacket consistent with being carefully cared for and most likely not read. No other discernible or objectionable faults on book or jacket such as marks or writing within, stains, tears, chips, or other damage that would diminish its appearance. No remainder mark, no previous owner markings or inscriptions, not price clipped, not a book club edition, not a former library book. Very legibly signed in black ink on the title page above his printed name. Signed by Author(s).

Light sunning to the spine, internally a near fine example. The second printing of A Soldier's Story, lacking the "first edition" statement on copyright page. In the publisher's first state dust jacket, $5.00 on front flap, chipping at head of spine, bright illustrations. Inscribed on the title page: "Personal regards and best wishes to my very good friend and golfing pal, Gen. Clark Ruffner, Omar N. Bradley / To be less formal, Hi Nick, Brad." An excellent association copy. Gen. Clark L. (Nick) Ruffner (1903-1982) graduated from the Virginia Military Academy in 1924. Ruffner served in World War II as Deputy Chief of Staff for the VII Corps from 1942-1943, where he contributed to the planning of the D-Day Campaign. In 1943, he was moved to the Pacific Theater, where he participated in the assault on Gilbert Islands and the invasion of Leyte in the Philippines. In the Korean War, he was Chief of Staff of the X Corps. His strategic expertise and diplomatic skills were instrumental in Korean armistice negotiations. Ruffner retired in 1962 as a four-star general after serving as the Army Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel.
