Very detailed books on British beetles, two volumes first editions, 622 pages of text in the first volume in overall clean condition just a few occasional foxing spots slightly heavier to last few rear pages, some notes and a drawing in pencil on last couple of blank pages. Second volume has169 full page illustrations, a map and index making 194 pages in total.a few illustrations have been very neatly coloured in with coloured pencils, some very light occasional foxing. Previous owners name neatly written on front endpaper of each volume dated 1932. First volume has a split to front endpaper at inner hinge, the webbing of the binding is sound but has made the binding a little loose. NO dustwrappers, outer boards are lightly marked and rubbed on edges, top edges of pages are gold which is a little dulled. Loosley inserted is an envelope containing photgraphs of beetles and a letter from Watkins and Doncaster Naturalists of London replying to a previous letter asking what the beetles were. 'A Practical Handbook of British Beetles' remains an important work on British coleoptera, and has remained the standard work used to identify British beetles into this century, with the British Entomological and Natural History Society having produced a companion volume containing the beetles not included in Joy's work. Norman H. Joy (1874-1953) was a British coleopterist best known for this work, although he also wrote 'How to Know British Birds' and 'British Beetles, their Homes and Habits'.Complete in two volumes, with uncommon dust wrappers.This is a first edition.Profusely illustrated with diagrams throughout. In a full cloth binding. Dust wrapper has a slightly sunned spine, with a fair amount of loss to the paper, in particular with a chunk of the head of the spine of Volume II missing.
