Edition statement and vol. numbers from half-titles. All volumes with half titles, engraved vignettes on the title pages, and engraved head pieces on the initial pages of the poems. Sporadic spotting throughout all volumes, in other respects a clean set. Contemporary full calf lightly rubbed, the smooth spines with red morocco labels. Couple of corners bumped with the boards peeping through. A very good and atrractive set in a contemporary binding. Originally published as ' A collection of Poems by Several Hands ' in 1748, 3 volumes, over the years more poems were added and hence the number of volumes was increased wth volumes five and six being added in 1758. In the first edition, vol.1. pages iii-iv Dodsley gives his reasons for publishing the work - ' to preserve to the public those poetical performances, which seemed to merit a longer remembrance than what would probably be secured to them by the Manner wherein they were originally published .' Robert Dodsley (1703 - 1764 ) was an English bookseller, publisher, poet, playwright, and miscellaneous writer. Coming from very humble beginnings in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, with the help of Alexander Pope and others he became one of the foremost publishers of the day. He is probably best remembered for the book offered here and his ' Select Collection of Old Plays,12 vols., 1744.
