The first comprehensive monograph on Jindrích tyrskı, one of the most important players in the Czech avant-garde. tyrskı (1899-1942) was a multi-talented genius; primarily a painter and photographer, he was also a writer and editor. Precocious, he began executing remarkable, original artwork in his teens and soon connected with soulmates Karel Teige, the painter Toyen, and the poet Vitezslav Nezval who would form the nexus of the Czech avant-garde. tyrsky took part in the Devětsil movement, developed with Toyen "artificialism" (an quasi-surrealist original take prefiguring postwar tachism). He produced shockingly erotic photomontages, collages and publications; he was a major surrealist painter, and finally a force of inner resistance in the German occupation. This book is the first to explore his contribution in great depth, and is the unparalleled resource for understanding or cataloguing his oeuvre and understanding the Czech avant-garde and surrealist movements.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This is the first survey of the work of painter Jock McFadyen. McFadyen describes himself as a realist, and his intense paintings describe the urban backdrop. Human figures used to be central to these works, but having made pictures about London, New York, Berlin and Belfast, the locations have in many ways become the subject. In these monumental paintings, the central characters of his early work are replaced by commercial buildings, walkways, vomitories and the natural landscape. Although never part of any group or movement, McFadyen sees his main precedent as the line of British realism which includes Sickert, L.S. Lowry, the so-called School of London, and younger contemporaries such as Richard Billingham. He is close to the debate about painting and its relationship to contemporary art practice.
