Paperback. Condition: Good. Go beyond merely forgiving and forgetting . and discover how to make peace with your past. "Like many of you, I've been dealt a few cards I do not think I deserved," writes Amy Lyles Wilson. "In response, I used to think forgiving and forgetting meant I had to act like I had never been wronged. The writers in this collection tell me otherwise. Forgiving, they say, does not require pretending you were never hurt. It does mean, however, that you'll need to make peace with your past to embrace the future." Learn how to genuinely free yourself from resentments and get on with your life through gentle guiding words from Henri Nouwen, Douglas Steere, Mary Lou Redding, Marjorie Thompson, Flora Slosson Wuellner, and others. This insightful, healing book addresses such questions as: What exactly is forgiveness, and what is it not? Should all hurts or offenses be forgiven? What do I do if someone refuses to forgive me? How do I forgive myself? If forgiveness doesn't come easily to you, take heart. With practice, you'll learn how to let go and move on.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Where is God when we are hurting or in despair? How can we respond faithfully to situations that cause us pain? Where can we find hope even when we feel hopeless?
Pain, despair, and struggle are part of life, and they test our character as God's people. John Wimmer approaches these challenges to our faith realistically and thoughtfully.
Although we can't always understand or control many things that happen to us, we can choose how we will respond to them. Wimmer encourages us to view difficulties as opportunities for spiritual and personal growth. Rather than diminishing faith, pain and despair can lead to greater trust in God. To endure through such times is a blessing.
This inspiring book offers practical help for moving from pain and despair to the blessing of hope. Wimmer reminds readers that with hope we also have faithnot the false belief that our lives will be pain-free, but true faith that God will lead us through our struggles to deeper levels of spiritual growth and wisdom.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Will McTeer was one of more than two million soldiers who fought to preserve the Union during the Civil War years of 1861-1865. He was not looking for a fight. He did so because he loved his country and what it represented and because he feared the Confederacy - an idea with which he, his family, and his community disagreed. McTeer grew up in the mountains of East Tennessee, a state that seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy, although it did so reluctantly. McTeer might just have easily sided with the rest of his state, put aside his allegiances, and cast his lot with the Confederacy. Many others did. McTeer did not. In 1862, when McTeer made his way past Confederate patrols, traveled to the Cumberland Gap, and joined what became the Third Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, the end of the war and its outcome was by no means certain. Had the Confederacy prevailed, he might have become an outcast - or even a traitor - unable to return to his beloved mountains. McTeer took that risk, as did many other sons of the South, and the nation owes all those like him a huge debt of gratitude. In this book, McTeer gives us what we find all too rarely: a detailed, exciting, but modest account of his actions and his reasons for taking those actions. He remembers his friends and neighbors with whom he fought. Many of them returned home to live active and productive lives. Many of them did not. McTeer does not dwell on justifications or rationalizations. The reasons he gave three years of his life to his country are self-evident to him, and he assumes, rightly so, that they should be self-evident to others. *** This book is published as part of the Blount County Public Library's Southern Appalachian Studies Editions. These editions are produced and marketed by the Blount Country Friends of the Library. More information about other titles in this series can be found elsewhere in this book. The editor of the series is Jim Stovall.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. When author Jan Woodard requested prayer after her breast cancer diagnosis, her texts, email, and mail were flooded with encouraging notes that inspired her to write about her journey through treatment. As she wrote a weekly column for her local newspaper, Woodard discovered that writing kept her from self-pity by helping her focus on others and shift from fear to faith. In Texting Through Cancer, Woodard shares the peace she found in surrendering her cancer to God. Through 42 reflections she offers practical ways to find beauty in ordinary moments. Woven throughout her meditations are 12 spiritual practices that challenge readers to explore their own faith more deeply.
