Trade PB (B&W photographs) A superb compilation of thoughtful interviews (many conducted by the book's editor) with some of the very best of an often overlooked and undervalued breed, the Hollywood screenwriter (many of whom were accomplished novelists as well, such as W.R. Burnett, James M. Cain and Niven Busch). The interviews, each of which is accompanied by a brief but informative introduction and a list of the subject's screen credits, are with (in addition to the three already mentioned) Charles Bennett, Lenore Coffee, Philip Dunne, Julius J. Epstein, Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, Norman Krasna, John Lee Mahin, Richard Maibaum, Casey Robinson, Allan Scott, and Donald Ogden Stewart.

[nice clean as-new copy, no discernible wear to book; the jacket has a bit of wrinkling and a faint paper-clip indentation at the top edge of the front panel]. (line drawings) The first English translation of this report on the movie colony as it was in 1936, when the author, on assignment for "Paris-Soir," spent a couple of weeks ensconced in the Roosevelt Hotel, and reported on his observations in a series of articles for his newspaper, which were later expanded and published in book form (originally in French, as "Hollywood, La Mecque du Cinéma"). Although he was a renowned man of letters in France -- a prolific poet, novelist and essayist who was no stranger to filmmaking, having worked as an actor and assistant director for Abel Gance) -- his name meant little, then or now, to an American readership, and although his book was translated into numerous languages, the present book is the first edition in English. "Part diary, part tall tale, [the book] records Cendrars's experiences on the streets of Hollywood, at studio gates, and in the hottest bars and jazz clubs, where he encountered out-of-work drifters, star-crazed sailors, and a vast pool of undiscovered talent. His chance meeting with Douglas Fairbanks, conversation with Paramount's master makeup artist, and ruminations on Los Angeles geography are all recounted in a highly personal, conversational style that anticipates the 'new journalism' of such later writers as Tom Wolfe." (It's interesting to ruminate on how this book -- widely published throughout the non-English-speaking world -- may have colored the perception of "Hollywood" in other cultures.).

(B&W photographs) "A provocative selection of the filmmaker's private writings and public lectures and interviews -- most never published before -- interwoven with transcripts of the classes Ray taught in acting and directing. From these rich materials Susan Ray has assembled a clear and detailed statement on the art of filmmaking that is certain to serve as a guide for generations of practitioners of film and theater craft. In its sensitive juxtaposition of class materials with essays, letters, notes, and journal entries, [the book] reveals the mind of an artist who worked and dreamed with a commitment that spared no one, least of all himself." In a long Introduction, Susan Ray (Nick's widow), discusses their life and work together during the last decade of the filmmaker's life, and Ray biographer Bernard Eisenschitz has provided a biographical outline.

Numerous black and white photographic and line illustrations, xv +153pp, index, notes, dustjacket, large octavo. Samir al-Khalil uses artefacts such as 'The Victory Arch' in Baghdad "to illuminate the nature of dictatorship, the relation between developed and developing countries, and the uses and true value of art. He demonstrates brilliantly how the [Saddam] regime has twisted both local and Western tradition to produce a highly emotive cocktail - citing Andy Warhol and Robert Venturi as foremost among the unwitting culprits." "Mr. Dirlik examines the application of the materialist conception of history to the analysis of Chinese history in a period when Marxist ideas first gained currency in Chinese intellectual circles. He outlines the historical analyses of major Marxist historians of the period in detail, relates them to currents in contemporary politics, thought, and historiography, and evaluates Chinese Marxist historiography from the perspective of the theoretical problems imbedded in the materialist conception of history." "Here for the first time within one cover [sic] is a survey of major medieval theories of communication, together with their applications to medieval literary works in Old English, Italian, German, Old French, Latin, and Middle English. The rhetorical tradition that had begun in ancient Greece was transmitted to the middle ages largely through the influence of the Roman theoretician Cicero. But medieval theorists put their own special stamp on this tradition, evolving a whole new set of adaptive rhetorical genres to deal with the challenges offered by verse-writing, letter-writing, and preaching.".
