The first of the many collaborations between author and printer. "The poems in this collection are arbitrarily arranged by the alphabetical order of their first lines. They represent a repertory of case-law rather than a code, a speech rather than a grammar, and seek to embody rather than to order the truths of experience. Hence they need not be read sequentially and lack a syntax though not a unity of meaning" - "My girl is fresh as paint / And maybe innocent. / She stands upon her toes, / So neat and so close. / Why shouldn't she sleep chaste / To marry at this last? / And what I do with you / Is wrong as an old shoe.".
