Brown cloth over boards with gilt titling to spine, debossed bands to spine, and embossed emblem in debossed rule to boards. Pages of volume one have heavy foxing to frontispiece, light scattered foxing and soiling to margins throughout, and moderate…to heavy dark soiling starting at page 284 till end of rear flyleaf; tissue guard is attached and intact with heavy foxing. Pages of volume two have dampstain to edges of title page, moderate foxing and spot of soiling to top edge of first few pages, stamping and foxing to pages 200 and 201, and light scattered soiling, dampstains and foxing to margins throughout. Endpages have previous owner's writing to front endpapers, volume one has spots of soiling to rear inner hinge and center of rear endpages, and volume two has dampstain to fore edge of first free endpaper and light scattered foxing to rear endpages. Text block is sunned, soiling to top edge, and faint dampstain to lower edge of volume one near spine. Boards have spot of soiling to lower edge of front board, and heavy bumping, chipping and rubbing to edges, corners and ends of spine particularly to tail. Heavy soiling to rear board and top corner of front board at volume two, rubbing to front outer hinge at volume one, and scuffing to spine with small chip to center of volume two. Binding is tight, spine cocked at volume one.
