Condition: Very Good. Reprint. 2002 reprint of 1908 original. Complete in itself but part of a 4 volume set. This is volume 3 âLawless Wealth - The Origin of some Great American Fortunesâ by Charles Edward Russell. The Muck-Rakers were a group of progressive journalists based around New York journals such as "McLure's Magazine" who, in the first decade of the 20th century, decided to take on the large trusts and the might of J.P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller. Unlike the anti-globalization campaigners today, they were not against big business as such, but were opposed to the form big business was taking and the impact it was having on American life and society. Their arguments had powerful and lasting effects on the legal structure of American business and on the shape of the journalistic profession. This collection opens with what has been called "the most important business book ever written" - "The History of the Standard Oil Company", by Ida M. Tarbell. Drawing on years of meticulous research, the doyenne of investigative journalism here uncovered the illegal methods used by John D. Rockefeller to monopolize the early oil industry, and these books of hers brought about the 1911 Supreme Court decision to break up the Standard Oil trust. Next in the set comes "Lawless Wealth", the story of the Tobacco Trust by Charles Edward Russell, one of the most gifted journalists of his day. In part inspired by Tarbell, he set out to describe how the Tobacco Trust had usurped the power and authority of its shareholders. The final volume in the set is "The New Industrial Unrest" by Ray Stannard Baker, another of the most prominent and prolific of the muck-raking journalists. Of a slightly later date than the other two works in the collection, it examines labour-management relations in America and ascribes much of the blame for labour unrest going back to the beginning of the century on the abuse of power by large corporate management. These books are important social as well as economic documents of their time, and their republication should be welcomed across many disciplines. Hardback. May show some shelf wear but content fine and unread.

Condition: Fine. Facsimile Reprint of the 1818 edition. Hardback. Set ISBN: 1855069563. Single volume only. Nicholas Carlisle (1771 -1847) entered the Naval Service before becoming Secretary to the Society of Antiquaries in Somerset and dedicating his time to a series of long, detailed and useful compilations. Between 1808 and 1813 he produced topographical dictionaries of England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. In 1818 he published the pioneering work "A Concise Description of the Endowed Grammar Schools in England and Wales". He subsequently indexed the journal "Archaeologia" and the first 14 reports of the charity commissioners, and was for a time a commissioner himself. The Charity Commission was proposed in 1816 by Henry Brougham (later Lord Chancellor), and its reports, beginning in 1819, form an important source for the history of 19th-century education. Carlisle pre-empted the Charity Commission with the publication of this major work which attempted to give an account of all the grammar schools in England and Wales. To compile this work Carlisle had sent out a circular to all schools asking for information which he then edited into book form. In total Carlisle gives historical and statistical information on some 475 schools, and though he started to compile a second edition to include the schools which had been omitted or which had not replied, this revised version never saw the light of day before his death in 1847. The work originally arose from Carlisle 's interests in heraldry and topography and it is suitably decorated with 68 engravings depicting school seals. There is no comparable contemporary work of documentary information on British schools and this makes it a key and unique resource for the study of the history of education just prior to the Victorian era. Fine and unread. No jacket.
