Hardcover. Condition: Used - Very Good. According to critic Howard Zinn ('People's History of the United States'), 'Greta Pratt's extraordinary photographs give us glimpses of people and places that stimulate us to think about our history, not only of the great American West, but of the nation itself. Her point of view is delightfully antic and provocative. We want not only to enjoy the moment of our viewing, but also to study and ponder each photograph, challenged to find its larger meaning.' 'Using History' takes us on a tour of Americans celebrating their past. From Civil War battle reenactments to Abraham Lincoln impersonators to colossal buffalos and Indians, Greta Pratt's color photographs examine how historic iconography is used, and her work challenges us to question who Americans are. Taking an approach that is both affectionate toward her subjects yet sardonic about the larger implications of their actions, Pratt cuts to the heart of the ambivalent drives that move Americans. Top of spine bumped, otherwise very nice, clean, tight copy free of any marks.

Hardcover. Condition: Used - Like New. For four years, Robert Weingarten photographed Amish communities in Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin. In 80 photographs, Another America captures the beauty and simplicity of a way of religious life that has been sustained for more than three centuries. Descendants of the followers of Jakob Ammann, a Swiss Mennonite bishop of the seventeenth century, the Amish came to America in the early eighteenth century in search of religious freedom. The Amish have their roots in the Mennonite community. Both were part of the early Anabaptist movement in Europe, which took place at the time of the Reformation. The Anabaptists believed that only adults who had confessed their faith should be baptized, and that they should remain separate from the larger society. They uphold basic Bible doctrines, believe strictly in following Christ's example of nonviolence and stress humility, family and community. Many early Anabaptists were put to death as heretics by both Catholics and Protestants, and others fled to the mountains of Switzerland and southern Germany. Here began the Amish tradition of farming and holding worship services in homes rather than churches. In 80 photographs, Another America captures the beauty and simplicity of a way of religious life that has been sustained for more than three centuries. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.

Hardcover. Condition: New. he pictures in Ether, Sheikh's first book in colour, were made as a way to honour the experience of death and to try to comprehend its significance. Benares (Varanasi) is one of India's sacred cities, where many Hindus come to die in the belief that they will find salvation. As he walked its streets by night, Sheikh observed sleeping figures, shrouded in blankets, lost to an oblivion that seemed, in that holy city, to offer a simulacrum of death. In watching these ambiguous figures, which hover in the imagination between a dream state, sleep and death, Sheikh recalled his own experience with his dying father and their passage together through his father's final days. He remembered it as an invaluable period of emotional connection with the body and soul of the person he knew and loved, a connection that reached back to his paternal ancestors, who had travelled south from northern India a century before. To lose oneself in sleep is to abandon the senses and leave the way open to a dream state in which mind and body separate. Just as, in death, the soul leaves the physical body behind and takes to the air, becoming ether. Hardcover. Condition: New. This book of new water-colours by Jim Dine continues his life-long obsession with the character of Pinocchio. Dine first encountered Pinocchio through Disney's acclaimed animated film which he saw as a child in 1940, and later through Carlo Collodi's original text. Says Dine: 'I have for many years been able to live through the wooden boy. His ability to hold the metaphor in limitless ways has made my drawings, paintings and sculpture of him richer by far. His poor burned feet, his misguided judgment, his vanity about his large nose, his temporary donkey ears all add up to the real sum of his parts. In the end it is his great heart that holds me. I have carried him on my back like landscape since I was six years old.'.

Hardcover. Condition: Used - Very Good. Jim Dine is a consummate draftsman whose images of tools, large-scale nudes, self-portraits, and studies from nature and after antiquity are among the most accomplished and beautiful drawings of our time. This National Gallery exhibition and catalogue, the first major survey of Dine's drawings in 15 years, features over 100 of the finest examples from the 1970s to the present, works drawn from public and private collections. During the 1960s, Dine's name was inextricably linked with Pop art, but he made a dramatic shift during the 1970s, devoting himself to drawing from life. Drawings of Jim Dine examines the artist's accomplishment by focusing not only on works on paper but also on drawings in a purer sense: ones that largely incorporate line and rely heavily on materials such as pencil, chalk, and charcoal. Although many examples deviate from this standard, the emphasis here is on works that demonstrate the artist's skills as a draftsman and underscore his traditional underpinnings, even as he breaks new ground. Book is signed by previous owner. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks. wrapped in complimentary Brodart dust jacket protector.

Trade Paperback. Condition: New. Jim Dine's status as a master draughtsman is unquestioned and this book presents the best of his most recent drawings. Hello Yellow Glove opens with one of Dine's most treasured motifs, Pinocchio. Using dense charcoal and dripping washes, Dine depicts the sinister edge to Carlo Collodi's story and Pinocchio's isolation in his quest to become a real boy. With similar dark layers and dissolving forms Dine also depicts botanical motifs such as the thistle and catalpa tree. In addition to these bodies of work, Hello Yellow Glove presents Dine's portrait of Gerhard Steidl, an ambitious suite of nine drawings made by the artist in his G ttingen studio. Alongside reproductions of the drawings are photographs of Dine taken by Steidl during the sittings, which form both a candid portrait of the artist and offer a rare glimpse into his working processes.

Trade Paperback. Condition: New. This book presents photos taken by Roman Signer on a 2005 journey through the Carpathian Mountains, which took him to the Ukraine and Romania. The photos evidence brief stops at the side of the road and present subjects that fall into two distinct categories: home-grown fruits, vegetables and other produce for sale, carefully displayed on stools or small tables; and loving memorials of flowers, crosses and wreaths for deceased family members and friends who were road casualties. The similarity between each composition - the landscape format, the colourful centred arrangement, the consistent distance between photographer and subject - belies a deeper message: the produce suggests sustenance, growth and plenty; while the memorials are signs of tragedy and grief. Karpaten / Carpathians is thus not only a collection of travel photos, but a reflection of the human need to shape events, and a succinct story of life and death - both realities along the metaphorical road on which we all travel.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Used - Good. Japanese contemporary artists have mined some distinctive territory in the past decade or two--from the Superflat movement, to the referencing of traditional art objects like scrolls or contemporary pop phenomena like manga. Within these conventions, certain themes continually surface--nature in conflict with the manmade world, costuming and the search for personal identity and the child as cultural icon. Heavy Light identifies these themes as they are evidenced in recent Japanese photo-based art, and examines how they are reshaping Japanese tradition. This volume is published in conjunction with the major Spring 2008 exhibition at New York's International Center of Photography, which includes a diverse selection of artists: Makoto Aida, Naoya Hatakeyama, Naoki Kajitani, Hiroh Kikai, Midori Komatsubara, Yukio Nakagawa, Asako Narahashi, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Tomoko Sawada, Risaku Suzuki, Miwa Yanagi, Kenji Yanobe and Masayuki Yoshinaga. Also featured in this volume are extensive interviews with the artists, offering accounts of their working methods and their thoughts on the influence of contemporary art on Japanese culture during the last several decades of rapid change. In addition, art historian Linda Nochlin and writer Akiko Otake provide invaluable essays. Japanese contemporary artists have mined some distinctive territory in the past decade or two--from the Superflat movement, to the referencing of traditional art objects like scrolls or contemporary pop phenomena like manga. Hardcover. Condition: New. Petra Wittmar was born in the central German village of this book's title in 1955. This photographic inventory of her hometown from 1979 to 1983 analyzes its architecture and topography as a way of disclosing the structures of local life. Wittmar's interest was sparked by drastic changes in the 1970s, which saw parts of the village replaced with increasingly interchangeable, standardized architecture, and by extension perhaps standardized culture and lifestyle. As that new construction and new taste was taking hold, a contrasting yearning for 'home' arose, which Medebach explores. Wittmar's renunciation of inflammatory moments and her largely formal stringency distinguish these images, which can also be read as a German reaction to the American New Topographics movement of the late 1970s. Trade Paperback. Condition: Used - Very Good. In this collection of 120 black-and-white photographs, Roni Horn takes us on a journey through a locker room in Reykjavik, Iceland. With minimal movement between the camera and subject in succeeding frames, and through the use of a slow-shutter technique, this finely crafted body of work provokes the viewer to contemplate the subtleties of each image. A blur behind a portal suggests that someone else is in the locker room with the viewer. Room numbers, open and closed doors, and intersecting hallways give clues to the surroundings, and as we turn each page of the book, we sense the subtle shifting of time and space in photographs that reflect a sculptor's attention to the details of surfaces, repetition and form. Ringbound. Condition: Used - Like New. No Jacket. 'That Belgian, he doesn't even leave you the crumbs, he's a cannibal!' Christian Raymond In cycle racing there have been some amazing feats, stories of comeback and daring, of victory and tragedy, of personal sacrifice and bad luck - and then there is the story of the greatest cyclist that ever lived: Eddy Merckx. This extraordinary Belgian notched up an incredible 525 victories in a career that spanned just over thirteen years. No surprise then, that even his teammates nicknamed him 'The Cannibal'. Eddy Merckx was from a different time, a time when professional cyclists raced all year round, from the cold early season classics, to the hot summer grand tours. Today professional bike riders specialise in one event, yet Merckx was a true all-rounder, equally at home in the velodromes of Ghent as on the French Alps. He won all of the major bike races and more; the Cannibal was unique. This photographic collection is unique too, because it is the story of Eddy Merckx as seen by a fan. L'album d'Eddy does not show considered portraits or typical finish line celebrations, but intimate and personal images of Merckx. This book depicts races including the Tour de France and the 1971 World Championships in Barcelona, and shows many of the riders of the time such as Raymond Poulidor, Roger Swerts and Herman van Springel. The origin of the album remains a mystery: all we know about its possible owner is the inscription on the inside cover: 'Bien sportivement - M. Louis LeCouf' which is signed by Eddy Merckx. Very nice, clean, like-new copy free of any marks. No dust jacket, as issued.
