Descendants of the followers of Jakob Ammann, a Swiss Mennonite bishop of the seventeenth century, the Amish came to America in the early eighteenth century in search of religious freedom. The Amish have their roots in the Mennonite community. Both were part of the early Anabaptist movement in Europe, which took place at the time of the Reformation. The Anabaptists believed that only adults who had confessed their faith should be baptized, and that they should remain separate from the larger society. They uphold basic Bible doctrines, believe strictly in following Christ's example of nonviolence and stress humility, family and community. Many early Anabaptists were put to death as heretics by both Catholics and Protestants, and others fled to the mountains of Switzerland and southern Germany. Here began the Amish tradition of farming and holding worship services in homes rather than churches. Dine first encountered Pinocchio through Disney's acclaimed animated film which he saw as a child in 1940, and later through Carlo Collodi's original text. Hello Yellow Glove opens with one of Dine's most treasured motifs, Pinocchio. Using dense charcoal and dripping washes, Dine depicts the sinister edge to Carlo Collodi's story and Pinocchio's isolation in his quest to become a real boy. With similar dark layers and dissolving forms Dine also depicts botanical motifs such as the thistle and catalpa tree. In addition to these bodies of work, Hello Yellow Glove presents Dine's portrait of Gerhard Steidl, an ambitious suite of nine drawings made by the artist in his G ttingen studio. The photos evidence brief stops at the side of the road and present subjects that fall into two distinct categories: home-grown fruits, vegetables and other produce for sale, carefully displayed on stools or small tables; and loving memorials of flowers, crosses and wreaths for deceased family members and friends who were road casualties. The similarity between each composition - the landscape format, the colourful centred arrangement, the consistent distance between photographer and subject - belies a deeper message: the produce suggests sustenance, growth and plenty; while the memorials are signs of tragedy and grief. This photographic inventory of her hometown from 1979 to 1983 analyzes its architecture and topography as a way of disclosing the structures of local life. Wittmar's interest was sparked by drastic changes in the 1970s, which saw parts of the village replaced with increasingly interchangeable, standardized architecture, and by extension perhaps standardized culture and lifestyle. As that new construction and new taste was taking hold, a contrasting yearning for 'home' arose, which Medebach explores.
