Neuware -The discovery of new molecules that function in neuronal communication can be viewed as a progression of steps beginning with the identification of the molecular structure, moving to the understanding of the mecha nisms mediating the synaptic action, and to the appraisal of the involve ment of the new molecules in various neuronal mechanisms, and finally reaching the evaluation of this molecule's role in brain function and the consequences that are triggered by its abnormalities. Enkephalins have followed such a pattern, and the present publication expresses the salient points of the last two phases in this succession. Enkephalins were discovered in December 1975; in addition to pain threshold regulation, their participation in other brain functions was soon ascertained. Perhaps, there are multiple recognition sites for multiple molecular forms of endogenous enkephalins; similarly to other transmitter recognition sites, these are coupled with ionic and nucleotide amplifying systems; thus, when activated, they can modify membrane funtion and ionic permeability of membranes. The present publication probes the current status of our knowledge concerning the consequences related to abnormalities in enkephalin storage, release, and synthesis. However, since our basic understanding of enkephalins is incomplete, the views reported should be considered to be in a state of flux.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 512 pp. Englisch.

Add to basketTaschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This book deals with the underlying theory and practical aspects of pressure gauges that are at present in general use. Because of the ever-increasing demands to provide a wider range of sophisticated and reliable vacuum equipment a good understanding of these instruments is of vital importance to all workers in the research and industrial sectors. Of the gauges considered only the mechanical types are absolute, in the sense that they measure pressure directly as a force upon a liquid column or a solid surface. Under ideal conditions it is possible to calculate their sensitiv ities, which are the same for all gases and vapours. The recent developments in the viscous or molecular damping gauges indicate that these may also be considered absolute. Other gauges are indirect in that they involve the measurement of some secondary phenomenon which is pressure-dependent and therefore these gauges can only be used for measurement after calibration against an absolute standard. The radiometer or Knudsen type gauge has been excluded from the text since these are now only of historic interest. Also no mention is made of the integration techniques involving surface changes (such as work function) although these could have application under very special circumstances. The McLeod gauge is dealt with in some detail, for even though this gauge has few practical applications, it is the most sensitive absolute gauge available and has value as a reference standard.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 212 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Advances in Non-Linear Modeling for Speech Processing includes advanced topics in non-linear estimation and modeling techniques along with their applications to speaker recognition.Non-linear aeroacoustic modeling approach is used to estimate the important fine-structure speech events, which are not revealed by the short time Fourier transform (STFT). This aeroacostic modeling approach provides the impetus for the high resolution Teager energy operator (TEO). This operator is characterized by a time resolution that can track rapid signal energy changes within a glottal cycle. The cepstral features like linear prediction cepstral coefficients (LPCC) and mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) are computed from the magnitude spectrum of the speech frame and the phase spectra is neglected. To overcome the problem of neglecting the phase spectra, the speech production system can be represented as an amplitude modulation-frequency modulation (AM-FM) model. To demodulate the speech signal, to estimation the amplitude envelope and instantaneous frequency components, the energy separation algorithm (ESA) and the Hilbert transform demodulation (HTD) algorithm are discussed.Different features derived using above non-linear modeling techniques are used to develop a speaker identification system. Finally, it is shown that, the fusion of speech production and speech perception mechanisms can lead to a robust feature set.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 116 pp. Englisch.

Add to basketTaschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This book, written by the eminent Russian organic chemist Professor M. G. Voronkov, exhaustively deals with the reactions of sulfur with organic compounds. It is the only book on the subject which covers both work readily available to Western scientists and research carried out by Russian workers. Since much of the work discussed in this volume is not readily accessible to Western scien tists, it will enable them to find hitherto 'unpublished' research. In addition, Professor Voronkov has dealt with many reactions and processes of interest to the industrial chemist; e.g., there is an interesting section on sulfur dyes and related compounds, and the chemistry of vulcanization is lucidly discussed. Hence this book should be of value to both academic and industrial chemists inter ested in the chemistry and reactions of sulfur, and also to those synthetic chemists studying new pathways to organic compounds. The text has recently been updated and revised, and there are numerous references to publications up to and including 1980. An exhaustive index is provided to enable the reader to refer rapidly to any of the compounds, reactions, or processes discussed in the text.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 444 pp. Englisch.

(Indeed, the macroscopic statements afforded by variational principles may provide the only valid mathematical formulation of many physical laws. ) As such, it retains the spirit of natural philosophy common to most mathematical investigations prior to this century. How ever, it is a discipline in which a single symbol (b) has at times been assigned almost mystical powers of operation and discernment, not readily subsumed into the formal structures of modern mathematics. And it is a field for which it is generally supposed that most questions motivating interest in the subject will probably not be answerable at the introductory level of their formulation. In earlier articles,1,2 it was shown through several examples that a complete characterization of the solution of optimization problems may be available by elementary methods, and it is the purpose of this work to explore further the convexity which underlay these individual successes in the context of a full introductory treatment of the theory of the variational calculus. The required convexity is that determined through Gateaux variations, which can be defined in any real linear space and which provide an unambiguous foundation for the theory. 384 pp. Englisch.

There seems therefore, little pur pose in reiterating what has been said before and going over the same ground so adequately covered in a number of books as well as the trade press. We are indebted to the author of this excellent treatise on twin-screw extruders for getting right down to the business at hand. The author makes mention of two pioneers - Roberto Colombo and Carlo Pasquetti - who were the first to develop twin-screw ex truders. It was my good fortune to follow the work of these pioneers, and, interestingly enough, the principles were so good that their work continues to be relevant even to the advanced and more sophisticated models so well defmed in this book.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 152 pp. Englisch.

However, as a result of painstaking research, most of it carried out over the last five years, this barrier to experimentation has been largely overcome by the development of in vitro fertilization techniques for at least 11 different species, including man. The result has been a rapid increase in our knowledge of the physiological and bio chemical mechanisms involved in the fertilization process. The aim of this book, which is an extension of my recent review of cell surface interactions in fertilization (Gwatkin, 1976), is to present a brief, but well documented, account of the new knowledge that has been attained. Although this book deals with mammalian fertilization mechanisms, I have included some recent experiments on am phibian and invertebrate gametes to supplement the mammalian picture. This information is particularly valuable as the rela tively large number of eggs available from these lower forms has advanced our knowledge of certain fertilization mechanisms beyond what is known in mammals. However, in the interest of brevity, I have omitted details of morphology and minor varia tions between species. Add to basketTaschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This book is the result of an informal association between the editors which extends back to 1974. At the beginning, it was a tenuous alliance between physicians in quite different medical subspecialties-urology and psychiatry. As the alliance was forged, subspecialty rivalries and mistrust were replaced by a common clinical interest in the diagnosis and treatment of erectile problems. We quickly became aware of the high prevalence of such disorders, how poorly prepared we were to make accurate and re sponsible diagnosis and treatment plans, and how complicated an etiol ogical diagnosis could prove to be. A variety of biological and psychological influences bear on sexual function, and in many clinical contexts, diagnosis and treatment planning involves consideration of complex interactive var iables. The need for an expanded multidisciplinary team became obvious. The requisite knowledge base extended across too many subspecialty boundaries, and the necessary information was not available in a conve nient source. As we began accumulating the information base, we became aware that this information might be of value to other physicians. The authors enjoy the luxury of an academic setting in which special expertise can be readily assembled. Such resources are often unavailable to the physician in practice. Thus, it is our hope that this text can serve as a multi specialty team for the physician in solo practice. R. Research employing such beams is now a rapidly growing field with important applications ranging from the development of high power sources of coherent radiation to inertial confinement fusion. Major programs have now been established at several laboratories in the United States and Great Britain, as well as in the USSR, Japan, and several Eastern and Western European nations. In addition, related research activities are being pursued at the graduate level at several universities in the US and abroad. When the author first entered this field in 1973 there was no single reference text that provided a broad survey of the important topics, yet contained sufficient detail to be of interest to the active researcher. That situation has persisted, and this book is an attempt to fill the void. As such, the text is aimed at the graduate student, or beginning researcher; however, it contains ample information to be a convenient reference source for the advanced worker.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 364 pp. Englisch.

The intervening years have seen a remarkable expansion of psychological research on human aging, especially on topics dealing with cognition. They have also seen research on cognitive aging gain increasing importance within the mainstream of basic cognitive research. As my lecture notes for my course in the psychology of aging grew, so did my apprehension regarding the task ahead of me in revis ing the first edition. The research explosion in cognitive aging forced several major changes in content from the first to the second edition. Two chapters on learning and memory in the first edition were necessarily expanded to six chapters in the present edition. Similarly, the single prior chapter on percep tion and attention became two chapters, as did the single prior chapter on thinking. Another change from the first edition is in the addition of some review of the effects of abnormal aging on various cognitive processes, parti cularly in regard to memory functioning. To keep the revision within reason able length, some sacrifices had to be made. The multiple chapters on metho dology and theory in the first edition were condensed into the present, single chapter. However, the major topics from the first edition were retained and, in fact, added to by the inclusion of important topics and issues that emerged over the past eight years.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 872 pp. Englisch.

It is important, therefore, for any systems designer to have a good grasp of the mathematical bases used in CAD. The choice of mathematical models in a system also has an effect on the overall quality, although this effect may not always be visible to the final user. Depending on whether Bezier or B-spline functions are used for curves and surfaces, for example, the final user even if not a com puter scientist will notice a difference. If, for example, one of the control points is modified by the user, in a Bezier-type representation, the curve or surface will tend to be modified overall, but in a B-spline representation, the curve or surface will tend to be modified close to the point, and there only. More possibly harmful, however, is the effect of the mathematical model which has a number of properties invisible and unknown to the final user. In every case a model must be chosen with, it is hoped, the most appropriate characteristics and limits for the task in hand.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 168 pp. Englisch.

Recently eclipsed by other instrumentation such as LA-ICP-MS, XRF remains the mainstay of non-destructive chemical analyses in archaeology, particularly for volcanic rocks, and most particularly for obsidian. In a world where heritage and repatriation issues drive archaeological method and theory, XRF remains an important tool for understanding the human past, and will remain so for decades to come.Currently, there is no comprehensive book in XRF applications in archaeology at a time when the applications of portable XRF and desktop XRF instrumentation are exploding particularly in anthropology and archaeology departments worldwide. The contributors to this volumeare the experts in the field, and most are at the forefront of the newest applications of XRF to archaeological problems. Itcovers all relevant aspects of the field for thoseusing the newest XRF technologies to deal with very current issues in archaeology.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 252 pp. Englisch.

Many books, reviews and research articles have been published on this topic, from the purely mathematical to the most practical. This book offers an analytical approach to stochastic processes that are most common in the physical and life sciences, as well as in optimal control and in the theory of filltering of signals from noisy measurements. Its aim is to make probability theory in function space readily accessible to scientists trained in the traditional methods of applied mathematics, such as integral, ordinary, and partial differential equations and asymptotic methods, rather than in probability and measure theory.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 488 pp. Englisch.

It covers sheaf theory, cohomology, some Hodge theory, as well as some of the more algebraic aspects of algebraic geometry. The author frequently refers the reader if the treatment of a certain topic is readily available elsewhere but goes into considerable detail on topics for which his treatment puts a twist or a more transparent viewpoint. His cases of exploration and are chosen very carefully and deliberately. The textbook achieves its purpose of taking new students of complex algebraic geometry through this a deep yet broad introduction to a vast subject, eventually bringing them to the forefront of the topic via a non-intimidating style.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 344 pp. Englisch.

Along with the ongoing developments of graphical models, a number of different graphical modeling software programs have been written over the years. In recent years many of these software developments have taken place within the R community, either in the form of new packages or by providing an R interface to existing software. This book attempts to give the reader a gentle introduction to graphical modeling using R and the main features of some of these packages. In addition, the bookprovides examples of how more advanced aspects of graphical modeling can be represented and handled within R. Topics covered in the seven chapters include graphical models for contingency tables, Gaussian and mixed graphical models, Bayesian networks and modeling high dimensional data.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 192 pp. Englisch.

Reaching beyond the standard view of exceptional cognition equaling superior intelligence, the Handbook of Individual Differences in Cognition examines the latest findings from psychobiology, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience, for a comprehensive state-of-the-art volume.Breaking down cognition in terms of attentional mechanisms, working memory, and higher-order processing, contributors discuss general models of cognition and personality. Chapter authors build on this foundation as they revisit current theory in such areas as processing effort and general arousal and examine emerging methods in individual differences research, including new data on the role of brain plasticity in cognitive function. The possibility of a unified theory of individual differences in cognitive ability and the extent to which these variables may account for real-world competencies are emphasized, and commentary chapters offer suggestions for further research priorities.Coverage highlights include:The relationship between cognition and temperamental traits. The development of autobiographical memory.Anxiety and attentional control. The neurophysiology of gender differences in cognitive ability.Intelligence and cognitive control.Individual differences in dual task coordination. The effects of subclinical depression on attention, memory, and reasoning.Mood as a shaper of information.Researchers, clinicians, and graduate students in psychology and cognitive sciences, including clinical psychology and neuropsychology, personality and social psychology, neuroscience, and education, will find the Handbook of Individual Differences in Cognition an expert guide to the field as it currently stands and to its agenda for the future.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 520 pp. Englisch.

Research goals have included the development of compact, short-pulse, electrical power sources and the production of ultrahigh magnetic field strengths over significant experimental volumes. Energies measured in megajoules, currents in megamperes and timescales of microseconds are not uncommon in such work. Phase changes, insulator breakdowns, and local des truction of the apparatus are also frequently encountered. Some efforts have involved the use of high explosive systems, developing methodologies rather distinct from those of a normal physics laboratory. Manipulation of magnetic flux to exchange energy between high speed, electrically conducting flows and high strength electromagnetic fields remains, of course, a basic interaction of classical physics. The remoteness of the necessary experimental sites (at least in many instances) and the various national concerns for security of defense-related research have often limited the flow of information between investigators of separate organizations, working in common areas of technical concern. Occa sionally, however, it has been possible for the community of scientists and engineers engaged in work on high magnetic fields and related high energy den sity systems to gather together and exchange results and plans, successes and failures. The first such international gathering was in 1965 at the Conference on Megagauss Magnetic Field Generation by Explosives and Related Experi ments, Frascati, Italy.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 700 pp. Englisch.
