This has stimulated multiple lines of research with… profound implications for the earth and life sciences. The lines of research comprise the role of hydrothermal convection at seafloor spreading centers in the Earth's thermal regime by cooling of newly formed litho sphere (oceanic crust and upper mantle); in global geochemical cycles and mass balances of certain elements by chemical exchange between circulating seawater and basaltic rocks of oceanic crust; in the concentration of metallic mineral deposits by ore-forming processes; and in adaptation of biological communities based on a previously unrecognized form of chemosynthesis. The first work shop devoted to interdisciplinary consideration of this field was organized by a committee consisting of the co-editors of this volume under the auspices of a NATO Advanced Research Institute (ARI) held 5-8 April 1982 at the Department of Earth Sciences of Cambridge University in England. This volume is a product of that workshop. The papers were written by members of a pioneering research community of marine geologists, geophysicists, geochemists and biologists whose work is at the stage of initial description and interpretation of hydrothermal and associated phenomena at seafloor spreading centers.

It is not exactly clear what these names signify, particularly in chemical engineering. Some have suggested retreading the old war horse 'Bio…chemical Engineering' (or was it 'Biomedical Chemical Engineering). In an effort to demonstrate the on-going activities of chemical engineers in the life science area, we accepted the invitation of the Industrial and Engineering Division of the American Chemical Society to organize the 33rd Annual Chemical Engineering Symposium. We decided to call the symposium, Chemical Engineering in Medicine and Biology, and hence avoided the problem of having to decide which 'bio' prefix to use. Many chemical engineers in the academic and industrial world were contacted. From these contacts and a good deal of publicity arose the Symposium. The two-day meeting was held at the University of Cincinnati in the Losantiville Room of the Student Union Building on October 20-21, 1966. Twenty-one papers were presented on topics relating chemical engineering to medicine and biology. Tile papers were representation al of the scope of the activities across the country with presenters coming from Washington, California, Massachusetts, New York, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana and Texas. Most chapters also integrate biological (genetic), social, and de mographic data within an ecological frame thus presenting a holistic view of the population structures of ecologically distinct groups. The first chapter examines the body of early nonhuman primate lit erature that emphasized ecological determinism in effecting the popula tion structure of our primate ancestors-relatives. It also examines more recent literature (since 1970) in which it became apparent that greater flexibility exists in primate social structure within specific environmental frameworks. During the meeting the editors of the present volume, and those giving lectures, came to the conclusion that the verbal presentations deserved to be expanded and to be more widely disseminated in a permanent form. Thus the articles which appear in this volume were commissioned and prepared. A greater exchange of information between aqueous chemists and those concerned with molten salts is to be welcomed and to this end the present volume aims to focus attention on the borderline areas between the two in an attempt to facilitate a wider awareness of the concepts and methods appropriate to the respective specialities. Similarly, and parti cularly in the electrochemical field, a greater exchange of information be tween the academic and industrial practitioners of the subject is desirable. Because of this void the First Brook Lodge Symposium on Anti Atherosclerosis Drug Discovery was convened at Brook Lodge in Augusta, Michigan, August 13-15, 1975. The symposium was sponsored by The Upjohn Company and was international in scope, with investi gators attending from such countries as England, Japan, Belgium, and Italy. The symposium focused on the problems associated with the discovery and evaluation of new drugs effective in preventing or reversing atherosclerosis. The thrust of material is centered around animal models useful as tools in the search and evaluation of new drugs. Broadly categorized, the models are nonhuman primates, rabbits, rodents, quail, and tissue culture. The material is a mix of studies on serum lipids and, more importantly, of studies on the artery, irrespective of serum lipid levels. The prevention of arterial lesions, not reduction of serum lipids, is emphasized. These self-referent behaviors are social in nature in the se…nse that in large measure, they are the outcomes of pervasive social processes and are themselves major influences on social outcomes. As such, self-referent behaviors have the potential to be sig nificant organizing constructs in the study of the broader field of social psychology. In any case, they are regarded here as of intrinsic interest and are the focus of this volume. Four broad categories of self-referent behaviors are considered with regard to their social bases and conse quences as these are revealed in the social psychological and sociological literature. With appropriate discriminations made within each group ing, the four categories are: self-conceiving, self-evaluating, self-feeling, and self-protective-self-enhancing responses. Following a consideration of the social antecedents and consequences of each category of self referent behaviors, I present a final summary statement that outlines a theoretical model of the additive and interactive social influences on and consequences of the mutually influential self-referent behaviors. Between 1892 and 1894, Charles C. Willoughby did some exemplary excavations at three small burial sites in Bucksport, Orland, and Ellsworth, Maine, and made some models of that activity for exhibition at the Chicago World's Fair. These activities were encouraged by E Putnam, director of the Harvard Peabody Museum and head of anthropology at the 'Columbian' Exposition. Even earlier, another director of the Peabody, Jeffries Wyman, spawned some real interest in the shellheaps of the Maine coast, but that did not last very long.
