The latter are divided into two- and three-center covalent chemical bonds, metallic bonds, and exchange-repulsion forces. This approach allows statements of principle and systematic analysis. However, quantitative predictions on concrete large systems are virtually impossible, and there are no general rules that account for structural and chemical changes due to intermolecular interactions. Chemists are therefore left with qualitative descriptions in which the changes in electron densities are considered. Such models as the MO theory or the resonance concept unrealistically assume that the nuclei remain in fixed positions. Further difficulties are encountered in the attempted description on the 'nature' of the chemical bond, e.g., the forces involved. In order to avoid these difficulties an extension of the donor-acceptor concept, characterized by the comparison between equilibrium structures in different molecular environments, will be presented in this book. In this way, changes in the positions of the nuclei can be taken into account and the question of the nature of the molecular forces is no longer important.…

These almost completely forgotten texts contained important insights into the interpretation of quantum mechanics, and they provided several ideas which were missing or elusively expressed in SchrOdinger's published papers and books of the same period. However, they were likely to be misinterpreted out of their context. The problem was that current scholarship could not help very much the reader of these writings to figure out their significance. The few available studies about SchrOdinger's interpretation of quantum mechanics are generally excellent, but almost entirely restricted to the initial period 1925-1927. Very little work has been done on Schrodinger's late views on the theory he contributed to create and develop. The generally accepted view is that he never really recovered from his interpretative failure of 1926-1927, and that his late reflections (during the 1950's) are little more than an expression of his rising nostalgia for the lost ideal of picturing the world, not to say for some favourite traditional picture. But the content and style of Schrodinger's texts of the 1950's do not agree at all with this melancholic appraisal; they rather set the stage for a thorough renewal of accepted representations. Die Bedeutung der Herbizide ist von 1976 bis 1980 erneut gestiegen, und weltweit beträgt der Herbizid-Verkauf wertmäßig soviel, wie der Verkaufswert der Insekti zide und Fungizide zusammen! Langsam bedienen sich auch, bei intensiverem Anbau von Nahrungsmitteln und Nutzkulturen, 'unterentwickelte' Länder aller Arten von Pestiziden und Herbiziden, und so ist mit einer weiteren Steigerung der Herbizid-Anwendung zu rechnen. Von 1976 bis 1980 wurden viele neue Versuchsprodukte, aber vergleichsweise wenig neuartige Handelsprodukte bekannt, denn der Herbizid-Standard ist schon sehr hoch, sodaß es immer schwieriger wird, Herbizide mit wesentlichen Vorteilen zu finden, zu entwickeln und zum Verkauf zu bringen. Die mengenmäßig hohe Produktion wichtiger Herbizide macht es zudem schwierig, preiswertere neue Produkte herzustellen und einzuführen. Die stark angestiegenen Forschungs-und Entwicklungskosten für ein neues Pflanzenschutzmittel - etwa 100 Mill. D- erschweren den Fortschritt außerordentlich. Neuware -Die Bedeutung der Erddrucktheorie, die vor zwei Jahrhunderten aus der Kriegswissenschaft des Festungsbaues herauswuchs, wurde im Laufe der technischen Entwicklung immer groBer. Es stellte sich heraus, daB sie, weit iiber die Bemessung der Stiitzmauer, beim Entwurf jeder Tief baukonstruktion, bei jeder Griindung, bei jedem Tragfahigkeitsproblem usw. eine wesentliche und wichtige Rolle spielt. Das brachte mit sich, daB diese Theorien sich bedeutend entwickelten und verzweigten. Auf der heutigen Stufe der Wissenschaft erwies es sich daher als wiinschenswert, die Theorien, welchen der Ingenieur heute begegnet, kritisch zusammen zufassen und ihre theoretischen Grundlagen darzulegen. Bei der Abfassung dieses Buches habe ich dieses Ziel vor Augen gehalten. Aus der auBerordentlich reichen Literatur der Erddrucktheo rien konnten aber selbstredend nur jene Ergebnisse behandelt werden, die sowohl in theoretischer wie auch praktischer Hinsicht gleichfalls hervorzuheben sind. Vollstandigkeit habe ich nicht angestrebt - ich wollte dies auch nicht tun. Das Problem des Erddruckes auf biegsame Spundwande habe ich zum Beispiel nicht erwahnt, zumal die neueste deutsche Fachliteratur auf diesem Gebiet besonders reichhaltig ist.
