Neuware -In the context of water management, structures that measure the flow rate in open channels are used for a variety of purposes: (i) In hydrology, they measure the discharge from catchments; (ii) In irrigation, they measure and control the distribution of water at canal bifurcations and at off-take structures; (iii) In sanitary engineering, they measure the flow from urban areas and industries into the drainage system; (iv) In both irrigation and drainage, they can control the upstream water at a desired level. This thesis represents an attempt to place such flow measurements on a solid foundation by explaining the theory of water flow through 'long-throated flumes' and their hydraulically related 'broad-crested weirs'. On the basis of this theory, and on practical experience, these structures are recommended for use whenever the water surface in the channel at the measuring site can remain free. The thesis concludes with a design procedure that will facilitate the application of these structures. The idea to undertake research on discharge measurement structures was born upon my appointment as the first civil engineer with the International Institute for Land Reclamation and Improvement (ILRI). A translation and notes seemed essential if the material of the treatise was to be understood. It then seemed that Chapter 5 of Heytesbury's Rules for Solving Sophismata, on which the treatise was based, should also be included. My translation of the Heytesbury treatise is based on a fifteenth-century edition, supplemented by readings from a few of the better manuscripts. (A critical edition from all the manuscripts, of which Chapter 5 will be mine, is now in progress under the supervision of Paul Spade, but only a few insignificant changes in the translation should be necessitated by the completed edition. ) An examination of related materials seemed reasonable, and these included Heytesbury's commentator Gaetano, as well as a chapter from a treatise by Johannes Venator (in an edition in progress provided by Francesco del Punta). It seemed unnecessary to publish Gaetano's and Venator's related works in this volume, but all their departures from Heytesbury and the anonymous treatise are noted here. I have not examined other works in the tradition in any detail. I owe a great deal to my teacher, Norman Kretzmann, not only as regards the edition and translations, but also as regards the notes, study and introduction. The referees of the typescript (to me unknown) made unusually thorough criticisms and suggestions to which I have paid close attention. Neuware -In-fl ight simulation experiments performed in 1967 with a variable-stabil ity aircraft during the author's stay at Princeton University, motivated the study of handl ing characteristics of future transport aircraft with closed-loop fl ight control systems. In 1972, the first experiment took place at the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR, using one of its research aircraft. In anticipation of expected developments in (digital) fl ight control technology, the research programme following the first experiments was aimed at the establ ishment of quantitative handl ing qual ities criteria. An appreciable part of that programme has been sponsored by the Netherlands Agency for Aerospace Programs (Nederlands Instituut voor VI iegtuigontwikkel ing en Ruimtevaart) and the Department of Civil Aviation of the Netherlands (Rijksluchtvaartdienst). In 1981, a thorough review of the extensive and valuable data gathered was started. The result, presented in this book, was also included in the author's thesis for a Ph.D. degree of the Delft University of Technology. These iterations were caused by various administrative and logistical problems which need not be detailed. However, its direction being set initially, the iterations led to modifications of the original concept so that the final form was arrived at through an indirect approach. This circumstance may ex plain some possible deficiencies which might have been removed, had the final concept been implemented directly. The motivation arose from a perception that the newly restored interest, coupled with new developments, in hybrid methods employ ing progressing wave fields and oscillatory wave fields for time harmonic and transient guided propagation in manmade or general geo physical environments, and for scattering by targets and irregulari ties, merits exposure to the wider scientific community. Accord ingly, a meeting with highly tutorial content was envisaged. For administrative reasons, related to sponsorship and organizational structure, this objective could not be realized but, eventually, there emerged the possibility of convening an Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) under the auspices of the NATO Advanced Study Insti tute Series. The institute concentrated on three main subiects: the structure and dymanics of DNA, proteins, and visual and plant pigments. Its timeliness has been linked to rapid advances in certain spectroscopic techniques which yielded a consider able amount of new information on the structure and inter actions of biologically important molecules. Among these techniques Fourier transform infrared, resonance and surface enhanced 'Raman spectroscopies, Raman microscopy and micro probing, time resolved techniques, two photon and ultrafast electronic, and C-13, N-15 and P-31 NMR spectroscopies and kinetic and static IR difference spectroscopy receiced a great deal of attention at the Institute. In addition, an entirely new technique, near-millimeter-wave spectroscopy has been presented and discussed. Two introductory quantum chemical lectures, one on the structure of water in DNA, and another pn the energy bands in DNA and proteins set the stage for the experimentally oriented lectures that followed. Fundamental knowledge on hydrogen bonding was the topic of two other lectures. Panel discussions were held on the structure and confor mations of DNA, metal-DNA adducts and proteins and on visual pigments. Many scientists who normally attend different conferences and never meet, met at Aquafredda di Maratea. Evidence now exists that within certain para meters (i. e ion species (Ar+), ion energy (20-44 KeV), substrate 2 temperature (80-550° K), dose rate (100-500 gA cm- ) , residual x 5 9 pressure (5 10- to 5x10- mm Hg) and polar and azimuthal angle of ion incidence {4} reproducible surface morphology (etch pits and pyramids) is achieved on the (11 3 1) specific crystallographic orientation. The temporal development of individual surface features was alsoobserved in this laterstudy {4}, by employing an in situ ion source in the scanning electron microscope at Salford, a technique also empolyed in studies of the influence of polar angle of ion incidence {5} and surface contaminants {6} on the topographyof Ar+ bombarded Si. Studies have also been made on the variation of incident ion species with the (11 3 1) Cu surface and it was fully recognized {7} that residual surface contaminants when present could playa major role in dictating the morhological evolution. 780 pp. Englisch.
